Seeking help on a nick name of a rear admiral of Word War 2

Clifton Sprague - Rear Admiral of Taffy 3

So I was reading one of the stories of the Word War 2. In the battle of Samar it mentioned the Taffy 3 rear admiral Clifton "Ziggy" Sprague. I have no idea what "ziggy" means since I'm not a native speaker. Can anyone tell me why is he called "Ziggy"? Is it because of his personality or appearance or something he did? And what does Ziggy mean? Thanks alot!

I guess there could be many reasons for a nickname but I had a look on the net and it seems to be a German name so maybe because his name is Sprague could be the reason....
