How long will you leave your Christmas decorations up?

I never did do Christmas lights on my house this year. I just can't stand taking them down. The inside decorations came down yesterday morning as I was cleaning up the gift opening mess. I just don't enjoy all the decorations and what my mind sees as clutter. My tree came down yesterday morning, too. How about you? Does your HOA have a rule about a specific date for outside decorations to be down?

I don't have a schedule for Christmas decorations, putting them up or taking them down. This year I don't have to deal with the mess either way because I chose not to put anything up. We travel so I just didn't want to do it this year. Typically my tree would be up a few more weeks though.

Yes, we had a great trip (still here actually). Thanks for asking. We live in New Jersey and we are in Mississippi right now.

That would make sense if you are traveling not to put any decorations up. Where did you travel to? Did you have a good trip?

I don't put up a lot of Christmas decorations anyway but I do have a tree and a few things here and there. I usually take them down on the 31 December ready for the new year. To be honest after Christmas day they tend to get on my nerves a bit! All my decorations are indoors though - I don't have any outside my home.

I understand about the decorations getting on your nerves after Christmas! I feel the same way, but I start getting frustrated with them long before Christmas. LOL

I have taken everything Christmas related down and boxed them. Tomorrow they will take their usualy place in my basement until I drag them back up again next year. I live in a small apartment and nobody cares what we do for decorations or when we do it.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that has taken all of Christmas down. Do you decorate for other holidays?

90% of my inside decorations came down last night and were put up. My lights outside are still on my house and bushes, and they will come down tonight. My plastic candy canes have been taken down, but they need to be stored in the storage room. Now I need to go to Wal-Mart and pick up a new Christmas tree!

I will probably leave my christmas decorations up until New Years day. Because that is the time when everything begins to settle down once again, and I will have to get ready for school onces more. It is hard to get back into the swing of school, after you have had a two week break. After a certain period of time, christmas decorations just dont fit the tone of the house as well. So, in answer to your question- I will take my christmas decorations down, eventually :x.

I hear you about getting back into the swing of things for school. I am very routine oriented and get stressed when there is a major change in routine. The school break isn't too bad, but all the holiday activities start taking a toll on me. The best way for me to get back into sync is to take the decorations down and start back on our usual schedule, even if that only means getting up and having breakfast at the same time as usual.

We leave them up till the 12th day after Christmas making the house decorated outside and in for 25 days total. Being a bit of a skinflint, haha, I've taken to cutting a branch from our bay tree and using that for a Christmas tree. It works really well and the leaves stay on for the full term. A regular fir tree had dropped all it's needles and was practically naked by the time it was due to come down! I love Christmas and decorations and presents and family. Great time of the year.

Yes, it is a sort of tradition to mirror the 12 days before Christmas with the 12 days after. Well, any excuse really to leave the pretty decorations up. haha

That's really neat, smacks. I love hearing about people's traditions. I really haven't formed any real traditions with my family yet. I guess that just happens over time.

That's a neat way to take care of decorating. How did the tradition of keeping the Christmas tree up until the 12th day after Christmas come about? Is it for the 12 Days of Christmas? Using a branch off one of your trees is a really fun idea! Then you actually get to see your "Christmas tree" all year.

I usually wait until after New Years, this year I put the tree up later than usual and didn't decorate the outside of my house at all. I've already started taking down most of the decorations. My tree will be down tomorrow. I have a bit of an obsession with snowmen, and since we will have snow for at least a few more months I won't put them up yet.

I have some really cute ones, and since everyone knows how much I love them I always seem to get more for Christmas gifts This year I'd be fine with having no snow too! Usually when I'm pregnant I'm wishing for cold but this year it's just been too much work!! LOL

I have seen some REALLY cute snowman decorations. I don't blame you for keeping those out a bit longer. We don't get snow here, and I don't miss it. I do like to look at pictures and decorations of snow, though!

I took all mine down yesterday as well. I just dont have a lot of room, so i needed the space for all the toys that my daughter got. lol. plus everything looked a LITTLE TOO cluttered for my likings.

I understand needing the space for all the new toys! My family is moving on January 9th, so unfortunately I pretty much took the toys and packed them right after the girls opened them. The good news is that they will have plenty of new toys to go with our new place.

We usually leave the cards up all year. They are on one table, and we take the tree down after New Year. Mind you, there is also the Ukranian New Year and we are not Ukranian so sometimes the tree mght stay up a little longer, but usually the day after New Years's and it is that. We do not have any lights around our house and we do not have any on the tree in the front yard or any decorations for that matter. Many of the neighbors leave theirs up to the day after New Year, and the ones who are Ukranian leave them up to the day after the Ukranian New Year and I have no idea whose New Year's comes in March, they do not take their decorations dowen till then.

What do you do with the cards at the end of the next year? Do you have a display for the cards?

You've got something to that, since I make most of my gifts, I have to decide what to make for next year. I've done, scarfs, afgans, jewelry, more jewelry, beaded banners (this year), more jewelry....

Sounds like you had a hectic Christmas season. Only 300 and some odd days left to start getting ready for next year! I'm just kidding. I don't even want to THINK about Christmas again until November of next year.

Well, if you hand make gifts I could see starting to think about Christmas for next year already. I used to make gifts, but I found they really weren't appreciated so I just gave up. Of course, my work looks like a Kindergartener did it, so that may be why! LOL

I start the New Year by taking all the decorations down on New Year's Day... its like confirming my determination to be more organized in the future. We have the family over the night before, and we have everything lit up for the party. NY day I'm ready to move on and start thinking about the coming spring! We live in a tiny town in the mountains... and are independant as all get-out... no homeowners association making rules for us!LOL!

I have heard that, and perhaps thats why my Mom always did this... I'm following in her footsteps. I hope it will start me down a better path this year... I've been working on being more organized, but you can only organize this much stuff to a point... My resolution should be to stop seeing EVERYTHING as precious, and learn how to toss!LOL!

Learning how to toss is definitely an aquired art. I think I've gone too far that way. I can't stand anything hanging around that isn't used often. The one BIG exception is books. My kids have literally hundreds of them, I'm sure, but I can't let them go too easily!

That sounds like a fun tradition. A day of getting organized for the future. Do you have a family tradition that says that whatever you do on NY Day is what you will do the rest of the year? My mom always used to tell us that.

That's cool to have a tree in your room. This year my kids had an advent calendar that gave them an activity to do every day from the first of December until Christmas. One of the activities was to decorate their bedrooms. While I was gone one night my husband helped the girls with that and "made" Christmas trees for their rooms. He went outside and cut some palm fronds off one of the trees, stuck them in buckets of sand, and hung ornaments from the fronts. It was super cute. Unfortunately the fronts turned crispy pretty fast off the tree so we had to take the "trees" down before Christmas.

I enjoy having the decorations up and take them down when the neighbors take theirs down. This is normally sometime in January. Last year it was the second weekend of January and likely will be that weekend unless it rains. Several years ago they were up until February because it was raining.

Rain would definitely get in the way. We don't get a whole lot of rain here, but when we do during the winter it is miserable.

snowman ornament - This ornament was on the Christmas tree, picture taken with new camera
Well, since we don't have a HOA, there really is no rules like that. However, it has always been tradition to take down the decorations New Year's Day. But, the past 2 Christmas' I have taken the tree down and put the decorations away several days after Christmas, since we have had a real tree. As for taking down the outside lights and decorations, since Christmas 2005, it has been a matter of the weather and how cold it was out as to when I take those down lol. When I lived in Texas that was not a factor! lol I was just looking at my tree and inside decorations this morning, and thinking of taking it down. Just haven't had enough coffee yet! lol

I keep forgetting the weather would play a big part in when decorations would come down. Here in Arizona there is not too much rain, and the temperatures are pretty mild so being outside is enjoyable.
