Do you find there to be a difference between the many different computer brands that are out there? You have Dell, Sony, Compaq, Gateway, HP, and others that I cannot think of right on top of head. Do you find there to be any difference in reliability between these brands?

Yes, Considerably.
HP and Dell are the market leaders as far as PC's right now.
Dell owns Alienware.
HP owns Compaq.
Acer recently bought Gateway, which owned eMachines.
Sony is a nice brand.
Toshiba is another nice brand.
Lonovo/IBM's are ok if you get a nicer model.
I was in sales (Circuit City) for a year. Because of the buyout of Gateway, I would never buy another one-- I dislike Acer with a passion. I've worked on all of them-- there will always be a problem (just like cars) but if you keep one simple thing in mind while looking for a new computer, you'll be fine: You get what you pay for.
If you get the blackfriday Compaq for $399 or $299, please don't think its going to last more than a few months, really.

I have heard recently that Dell is dropping off as far as being a "leader".

Hardly, with their entry into the retail store market (Walmart and Best Buy) Dell and HP still switch off almost every quarter in sales volume.

That you are wrong...Even with Dell being in Walmart, that doesn't mean they will outsell HP...
HP has been reigning in the past few quarters already, even in Asia...
Dell has gotten too much bad publicity and now that is biting them back....
But for PCs, I won't choose either brand....I would choose to DIY myself

well i dont think there is much of any kind of differences between these brands of computers.....
they all buy off the parts form vendors and just assemble them and provide support them....
so they differ slightly in price and service only...other than that...all are smae

Well I have a Hewlett packard now but i did one time have a compaq, they both were good as far as performance.I got rid of my compaq because i got a new computer that had more memory and was updated..Both of mine were desk types.I just got a brand new laptop and it is a gateway, so far it has been great, but i have not had it long so i cannot compare it to the others as yet.

I have used a number of these computers and it seems I prefer Hewlett Packard. I have just had luck with those I guess and that is what I have always purchased for my home. But at work through the years I have used Compaq, Dell and others, and although I wouldn't say there is a huge difference, HP seems more reliable.

i dont look on brands i would prefer to use a generic one that fits my budget and works for me not me working for my computer.there are a lot of computers out there that is good in functionality without the brand name.there is no difference between reliability between brands they all use almost the same parts and hardwares.most of them from china, japan and korea.i was wondering what these countries have, why they contribute much in computer hardwares and yet they dont have their own computer brand like apple or mac.
