Dangerous driving after big snow

My husband and me are new drivers. Today is the first time we go to work after big snow. Once the car slides to the other lane when we try to stop before the red light and it's very dangerous.

Tires are extremely important for ice and snow driving. I live near Chicago and no matter how bad it snows most people still drive to work for some reason. I notice a huge difference with the right tires, a heavier car is a plus too, and 4WD or at least front wheel. But yeah its pretty dangerous if you're not used to it.
