What Frugal Habit will you start in the New Year?

What new Frugal Habit will you start in the New Year? I ask this question because I try to start a new habit to be frugal each year. I have only been doing it a few years so my new habits aren't too many yet. My new frugal habit will be to cut out soda while eating out. We don't eat out often but when we do they charge 4 dollars for a drink for one person. So I will cut out soda while eating out. I might even go a bit more into it and try to get my family to order water also.

I think I need to tackle the element of food wastage at home-every meal that we have, we have alot of left over food that gets poured because the house maid and my boys never like left over foods, i am going to put my foot down and rule that the left over foods be recycled to the next meals-if lunch remains, itwill constitute a bigger part of supper-if supper remains it will constitute a bigger part of lunch-this will reduce expenditure on food this year!

You know just tonight I made everyone eat leftovers. None of them were too happy about it. We don't usually eat left overs either. My husband even tried to use the well we can order pizza. Nope I dislike wasting food!

You go girl! You rock. Saving money is the best. I once had so many coupons that of course the manager had to come and turn there key because I got like 20.00 worth of stuff for like 2.00 serious. You use the coupon & the sale and sometimes make out like a bandit. One time I got a shirt for 49 cents at Old Navy brand new. I also love thrift stores.

I love it when I walk out of the grocery store with them owing me money. I have done it more now than when I was young.

I am right there with you I can't give it up totally but I can cut it out when eating out. I get all my soda on sale which I personally think drives my husband nuts. Like today I got purchased 2 2liter sodas and got 3 free. And I had coupons so I spent 1.15 on 5.

I like the idea aboutnot ordering soda when eating out. It seems to me, that so often when I get the soda, it doesn't taste right (too watery, too much soda water, too much fizz, it's flat, etc.) If I go somewhere with free refills, I will order a soda though, only because it tastes better than water, and you can keep drinking it and drinking it and..., well, you get the point. Since I'm starting this year on short-term disability at only 60% of my regular pay, I'm going to have to be more frugal than usual. I'm a pretty frugal person to begin with, but will be finding new ways to be frugal - or, finding old ways of being frugal and finding ways to incorporate it into my daily living somehow. I can't wait to read the rest of the responses!!! Thanks for the post!

The main thing I'm going to do is teach my stubborn s/o how to be more frugal. He hates change and trying new things so it will be a struggle but so worth it in the end. He is way too attached to his brand name processed foods and canned goods...and brand name everything else too. I'm also going to get him to live more green. Alot of things will be tricky because of our current living situation but we can change that after we3 change spending habits. The other things we're doing...although for more selfish/practical reasons than just being frugal...is to get both older boys potty trained whether they like it r not. The younger one is ready and we've already had some success with him, the older one is BEYOND old enough but is just plain stubborn about it. The baby will still need diapers...and I do have cloth but no one here is very accepting of using them...but we'll still save a lot not having to buy them for the older two. I have a lot of other ideas too but they'll have to wait until these ideas start putting extra money in the bank.

Almost 3 is nothing LOL the stubborn one will be 5 in March but we started trying to train him at 2 1/2. We've read books and tried everythig under the sun...and he's not our first child so we knew about potty training already and never had a bit of trouble with the 5 total kids before him! He's not delayed or disabled or anything, he just won't use the potty. Our other one is 2 1/2 and is so ready and has been doing really good. We've always had to use brand name diapers on him because he would get horrible diaper rashes otherwise, in fact the ONLY brand he can wear right now is Huggies and only the size 6's...something about a dye that's used in the more common sizes or something. The baby can pretty much wear whatever...he's 13 1/2 months...but Daddy is just too into name brands.

Great Ideas! Here in our house we are trying to live more green too. Thank goodness we are past diapers! That would kill my budget every month and at one point I had 2 in diapers. I used cloth on both of mine when we were at home until they got yucky then stopped doing that. We had a hard time potty training our daughter she was almost 3 before she was potty trained completely. Just food for thought, the name brands and the generic brands are made by the same company!

food for thought on the rash thing put some vaseline jelly on them works better than anything you can get. Also would work for using less expensive diapers. We lived overseas when our kids were in diapers so they were 3 times the price they are in the states so I tried everything.

I am about at the end of options. I do so much frugal savings that I can't think of any thing else to do. My blog Coffee Break Whatever Save Money (Link in my profile) Details all the things I have done, still do, and ways to save money. It isn't hard, you just have to want to save. In my case, it was out of necessity - I was raising 2 kids on a limited budget. It was to make ends meet. But there are so many ways you find you are wasting money and don't even know it! The water instead of soda at dinners - I've been doing that for while. I ask for lemon with the water and then squeeze it into the water and add a packet of sugar and I have lemon ade. But I don't really like it sweet so just the lemon in the water is really nice. Also it doesn't fill you up like soda does so you can eat your whole meal. But then what I do is eat the baked potatos and salad, and take the meat and bread home for tomorrows lunch!

Now that is a good idea and I thank you for passing it along to me, I love lemon in my water and that will be a great way to be able to eat all of my dinner.

And look - you saved $2.75 per drink! And don't even notice it! That's what I mean when I say we waste money and don't even know it! I started out doing that just cause I couldn't afford the drinks in the first place - even with free refills (remember when they charged for refills?) But then realized - i'd be wasting my money anyway!

We are trying to eat more fruits and vegis, so we are growing a larger garden. We are also trying to pay 110% of all our debts monthy bills. It doesn not sound like much but it is going to pay a lot of extra on our home. The soda idea is a great one. We dont drink a lot at home but at resturants we splurge a bit more so that could save us tons. Thanks

That is where they get you too on the soda's. Even soda at a fast food place purchased not in a combo cost 2 to 3 bucks. Ouch!

i think mine will be to rent movies than watching them in the theaters. the price of movie ticket becomes so expensive that it is now equivalent or more than my meal budget. another one will be to walk more and not take taxi whenever i can.

Gosh your not kidding, we went to see National Treasure 2 today and it was 25 bucks just for tickets before 2pm They go up after that. Plus ok we were bad and got drinks and that was 15 bucks. So like 40 dollars to see a movie and it would be 15.99 to purchase it. Ok if it weren't for the fact that I really wanted to see the movie we wouldn't have spent that.
