Do you keep or exchange a gift

When you get a present, for instance for christmas, and it is really something you don't like. Will you keep the gift and say thank you, or will you go and exchange it at the shop?

I am a keeper, if someone went out and spent their hard earned money on something for me that speaks volumes and if I really don't like it I thank them and keep it anyways because it shows me that someone actually loves me. My sister is a returner and I always thought it was rude of her. To each his own I guess.
