Its a new year again, and its like starting anew again or resetting a game and start from the beginning. As far as I know, the Chinese has a different date for New Year based on their calendar, and they greet Kong Hei Fat Choi, but how about the other countries, do they also follow the Gregorian calendar and celebrate new year on January 1, even if they don't, how do they say "Happy New Year" in their native tongues. "Manigong Bagong Taon" in our tongue, Tagalogs of the Philippines

I am from China. In the South China, it is used Cantonese and it is Kong Hei Fat Choi. However, Mandarin is the official and formal language in China and it is Xin Nian Kuai Le / Gong Xi Fa Chai.

Yes, it's MANIGONG BAGONG TAON in the Philippines but I do not understand really what is MANIGO. In our Ilocano dialect - NAIMBAG A BARO NGA TAWEN! HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you!

If you say Happy New Year in my language, then first thing is that January is not the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar. All over the world, Hindus celebrate the new year in the middle of April i.e. when the month of Baisakh starts. As a Bengali Hindu I am no different and our new year in 2008 will be on the 15th of April 2008. it’s a very auspicious day for us and on that day we wish everybody ‘Subho Naba Barsha”. Subho means everything good, Naba means new and Barsha means year. So this greeting means ‘I wish everything good to you this new year’. Apart from this, of course we have a lot of fun on 31st Dec/1st Jan. we keep up till 12 and on the stroke of midnight, we call up all our friends and families and wish them. it’s a lot of coming together and enjoying ourselves really.

I suppose the Hindu calendar is also based on the moon, like the Chinese, do you also base the new year on the phase of the moon? Anyway, Subho Naba Barsha to you and your family. Thanks for the response.

Hello! Sounds like this New Year is coming with full activity. Many things are to happen, I think. Here in Brazil, we say Feliz Ano Novo, being Feliz - Happy; Ano - Year; Novo - New. Yes, the adjectives does not need to come before the word. But it's not wrong if they do. Note that I speak Portuguese: brazilian language does not exists. Respectfully.
