Hello im yet another kiwi, New Zealander. Sadly I have never taken up an oppurtunity to learn Maori. However I do know a few basic phrases. At the moment it's Maori language week and so I have picked up a few new words. :-)
I think its important for New Zealanders to learn about the Maori culture as its part of what makes up our unique indentity of being New Zealanders.

Hi, nativepukeko.
I've visited Christchurch, New Zealand for once, actually. In my one week stayed there, I like New Zealanders accent when they speak english. And spotted one group spoke Maori language. I think it is very hard to learn, unless I get married with Maori people and of course, from that time I have to learn Maori language.
I still remember about the government campaign about Maori Language Year was about in 1995, isn't it? What has had happened actually ? Was it successful? as far as I am concern, Maori today account for about 13% of the population in New Zealand. Is it true, nativepukeko.
Happy Postings and Earnings, nativepukeko.
HAPPY DAPPY.
