Art is definitely one way to teach. There is a school of thought called Multiple Intelligences. If you e-mail www.newcityschool.org, they will send you information or give you a link to learn more about this. It will open your eyes to a whole new world.

I am a Special Education teacher myself. There is no crash course. I obtained my bachelors in General education and special education and it took five years to get it. Also it is probably in your best interest to not use the term sped. It is often used in a derogatory way by some general education teachers etc... There are some programs that employ art therapy for special needs students but it depends on the school you will be working in. Is it strictly a Special Education school or is it a public school. If your in a public school is the class your teaching a self-contained class (meaning all of the students are special needs) or is it an inclusion class? Although art is used as one way to reach children in need, it benefits all children of all ages. It builds motor skills, spacial awareness, self-esteem and the list goes on. What year are you in College. You maybe be able to combine the degrees right now and may not have to wait to obtain your degree in Special Education. Good Luck and no matter what teaching any child is rewarding and the medium of art benefits everyone. Sincerely Colleen

I have never heard of a crash course for special education teachers... since teaching special children entails patience, a lot of work, and skill different from teaching ordinary students... i have a friend whose Masteral is special education and i witnessed how she is training to be able to teach special children...
I think your goal is very nice... i hope that you will be able to complete your special education course...

it depends upon a person. what field of special education you want to teach? there are many like hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally challenged, children with autism, learning disabled and many others.
it is your choice or interest which kind of special people you want to teach. i am a special education instructor for 10 years now working with deaf and hard of hearing college students. So i need to learn sign language.

As an art teacher, you will more than likely be working with Special Education students. Some students are mainstreamed into regular educations classes and just receive modifications. Some students attend Resource class for the subject areas in which they qualified to receive services in, but remain with the general population for all other subjects. When I taught Life skills, my entire class attended electives, such as Art, Music and P.E with their general ed. peers. Talk to your advisor. He or she will know about required classes. I taught Special Education for 9 years before becoming a stay at home mom and I miss being an educator so please don't hesitate to contact me if you need help or advice.
