Writing as a career

I often hear of people trying to make money on line, in every possible sort of way, however writing is not often mentioned.
Writing often comes to my mind as to the most needed thing in the Internet world, the most valuable commodity. Site such as, you guessed it, MyLot are proof of this general need in order to draw traffic to a website.
What would be the best way to promote yourself online as a writer for hire, even as a modest amateur who will work for little and work my way up the chain?
I am presently trying to make a living from my home. As my usual career of construction has waned for the season, I feel I have the perfect opportunity to take the plunge.
I would have to actually make a little money for my writing, as we (I am a family man) still have to eat.
Could someone point me in the right direction? I would write all night. I love MyLot, and will probably stay here, but I can't do it professionally for .50 day.

You are right, you probably can not do this as a career. I mean MyLot is interesting because they have a whole cornicopia of topics and you don't have to have a lot of depth to your writing, but it doesn't pay a whole lot. My suggestions is to try Odesk, you can get a few freelance gigs there and still have time to post here. Here is a referral : http://www.odesk.com/referrals/track/kha

Hi timothy,
I get that you are a passionate writer and want to write for the love of it. I really appreciate this fact. There are many such sites like yuwie, helium, newbiegen, which I am sure you know by now.
However, I want to share one site with you where you can write about how to do certain things and get revenues from it. It's very good for writers like you. I am sure you will like it.

There are lots of websites with Freelance work available. Unfortunately most require you to pay a monthly or yearly membership. However a lot of these sites get you good paying work. Not consistent of course, but good money and you can do jobs as you need to and only bod for the ones you really want to do. Sure you'll have deadlines once you get the job, but you choose when you bid, so if you're constructionb biz is busy you can take the time to do that and when it is slow bid for writing jobs. Good Luck. I am trying the novel route and work it bit by bit as I find time. It is taking a long time but I'll get there eventually.
