What think would be interesting is a platform that will unite your friends on MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, and other social networking sites so that you would have them all in one place instead of having to join every single site for the benefit of your friends/contacts/website visitors/whomever who use one but not the other(s). I am not sure if this is possible or how it could work, and while I don't like the idea of eliminating competition, if the purpose of these sites would be to keep in contact with various people in some way, it would make more sense to have them all in one place... I guess the best solution to that would just be to encourage your contacts to join whichever one you use...
As for starting your own, I think you could start by observing what people are liking and disliking about the popular networking platforms such as MySpace and Facebook and keep that in mind.

I dunno exactly what you would need to start. but i liked facebook a lot better when it didn't have all those stupid applications and things that you can add that never work properly, and are pretty useless.
And as long as its not stupid like hi5, i'm sure it will suceed, just keep it simple.

It is not easy to start a social networking site...
You need a lot of resources and that don't come cheap...You need a server farm that runs 24/7, terabytes of hard disks and gigs of bandwidth to sustain...
Then, you will need to promote your social networking site to get people to join...
Last but not least, you need paid programmers to help solve programming bugs when something goes wrong...
