i just had a conversation with my grandpa. he asked me if religion can save us from eternal damnation, i said NO. but he refuted what i said. he stated that religion helps us to be saved. why? because without our religion our faith will not be practiced and we will not know who to acknowledge as savior and our GOD. does he make sense? i guess so too..

Relgion cannot save you. Besides which religion? There are thousands. Religion is just a collection of words, beliefs, ideas, rituals, prayers, etc. It is not the religion that saves you it is what you do with the acquired knowledge along with your common sense that you develope as you mature. It is the knowledge of G'd and what you do with it as you walk your own path thru this world.

Religion can not save you. The only thing that can save you is belief in Jesus in Christ and the acceptance of the gift. The purpose of the gift was to do away with rituals and requirements. We have organized religion almost the same as why we have doctors...a place for experts so we don't have to do the research enough. Just like in Medicine today, we should do our own research and find the truth orselves.

Religion per se does not save anybody. But there is a true religion where people should belong but it does not mean also that if you belong to that true religion you are automatically saved. Those who are not in that true religion are already judged and those who are in that true religion are the ones who will be judged and that means not all of them will go to heaven as some did not also meet the measure which God set for those who will be saved. So if we want to be saved, as the Lord Jesus said - Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness... the kingdom is the church and the religion is laid in the Holy Bible.

I do not believe in eternal damnation, so for me my answer is no. As for others... whatever gets them through the night, although I think that being a great human being in this life and not worrying about what may happen after this life ends would be a better place to devote one energy!

No, I do not believe that religion saves you. There are many who have a deep faith in Jesus but do not go to church. That is faith without religion. I don't think that being religious equates to faith at all. I think it is easier to stay true to your beliefs if you are around others who share those beliefs, but it is not absolutely neccessary.

There is no such things as eternal damnation or afterlife.
The "hell" is here on the earth. As well as heaven is!
The award for your good or evil is in THIS life, not in the next... actually there is not afterlife as far as I know, and if there is one, nobody of us is allowed to know anything about that.
The damnation that matters is in one's life, so the question can be made independent from religion. Because, with religion or with any other tool, the only one who can save you from "eternal" damnation is... YOURSELF!

you can never prove or disprove if there is an after life.. with regards to hell and heaven, i cant argue with you because that is how you perceive it, but as for me, it does not go that way. heaven and hell are not on this earth. they are somewhere else no human mind can perceive.
as much as you prove the existence of heaven and hell here on earth is as much as you cannot disprove my own understanding of the two. God Bless.. =)

I suppose to your grampa it makes sense...just like anyone elses response including mine, yours etc etc makes sense to us individually...
Do I PERSONALLY think religion "saves" you? No..not at all but I also don't care for the standard belief of what "being saved" is about...

I think you both have a good point. Your grandpa is correct in the sense that the true religion will help in man's salvation but we must be careful in seeking for the true religion. You, on the other hand, also have a good point because there are people who live in far-flung places that are unaware of religion also have a great chance in salvation since they follow the law that God had written in their hearts which we otherwise call as conscience.

yes, saving means not saving from all calamities and illness at all, but they can be too.
My religion giving me a meaning to my life, aim of my life and advices and framework for our life. Any disappointments and failings will not defeat a good believer.

He is right and you are right. Religion in itself can save noone. Going through the motions and rites of religion are not going to get you saved. However religion helps because it teaches you the tools you need to get your salvation. THere fore it makes perfect sense.
