I was just answering a post a minute ago about crazy laws still on the books in different states, when I started thinking of the stange names of some of our towns down here. We have a place called Two Egg and not to be out done we also have a One Egg. There is also Hell, Fort Christmas,JustAmereRd,and a few I cannot spell much less pronounce. What about you, does you state or province have some interesting names that would entertain or even educate us??

Where are the references to moonshine? I seem to recall some when I passed through a few times.

Oh that is funny. In the county of Kent where I used to live was a village called Wye pronounced Why. I often heard teenagers making fun of this.

I have a feeling that every country has their share of such places. I traveled to a lot of countries when I was in the service and I remember getting a few giggles even when I did not know the language well!

Yes, I love to travel and have seen many amusing names of places. Some I couldn't even pronounce! I like it when I go to a place with the same name like Canterbury in the UK, Canterbury is a suburb in Sydney in Australia and Canterbury is the area around Christchurch in New Zealand.

...of course George, WASHINGTON! I shoulda written that bigger... They are all over Washington State... there are many more, but I'll have to go through the atlas... many are too small to be seen on maps made for the internet. Most of them are Indian names... and many have been butchered in translation, as 'Seattle' was. The Chief they were honoring was named SEALTH!

When Hun was in the service, we were stationed in Neah Bay... when we went to the big city, we meant either Sequim or Port Angeles. Ask around Sequim about the Pettitts... that's my Pop's family!

I grew up near the Space Center so we had rockets everywhere. They are all gone now because even the Space Center did not keep them repaired properly. I think the High School in Titusville ended up with one of the rockets, but they have a terrible time coming up with the money for repairs. Everything rusts so badly down here! Yeah, I have looked for a town called Bacon to go with the Eggs or even Ham, but I never found one.

I live in Connecticut. The name of the town is one of the longest I've ever seen - some websites will not allow the full name, I have to abbreviate a certain way. I live in North Grosvenordale. (Pronounced Groves-nor-dale)

It teaches the local kids to spell anyway. I wonder what the history of the name is?

It was started by the Grosvenor family, if I've got my history right. It was a mill town years ago, a few big factories on the river. Lots of little mill town houses. Eventually it became know as Grosvenordale and then split into North Grosvenordale and Grosvenordale when the population got big enough for the post office to give us two zip codes.

Hello Adoniah, Hmmm, yes we have a number of oddly named cities & towns in New Mexico. The first to come to mind is Truth or Consequences, NM. Which was in fact named after the old t.v. show. Then there's: Bluit, NM Defiance, NM Field, NM Guy, NM Hatch, NM (which is quite famous for its chili's) High Lonesome Wells, NM Hope, NM House, NM Moses, NM Sedan, NM Organ, NM Pep, NM Pie Town, NM Sunset, NM Weed, NM Then, there are these three, which sound like lovely vacation spots. However, there's no lake or river present in the town. I guess it was just wishful thinking, eh? Lake Valley, NM Seven Rivers, NM Three Rivers, NM Last, but certainly not least, our largest reservior is Elephant Butte Reservior. It doesn't look like an elephant, and to the best of my knowledge we've never had grazing elephants in New Mexico. Hmmm, kinda' makes ya' wonder, eh?

Hi there Adoniah :)) we have a few interesting named towns in Tennessee. RLF beat me to Bucksnort.... But we also have Disco, Dismal (hate to know why that town was named that) Finger TN and one very close to me personally is Nameless TN. When the town was incorporated and the post office established the town still had no formal name so the post office called itself Nameless :))

Interesting or weird town names in my state? You be the judge!!! Tonopah (you know it from the Little Feat Song - Willin') Pahrump (no song - just funny sounding) Lost Wages ..er.. Las Vegas Ely (pronounced - EEEE-LEEEE) Winnemucca (Win-A-Mucka - no idea what a "mucka" is) Owyhee (probably named by someone sitting on a cactus) Gerlach (GrrrrLACK! - spitting mad) or how about where I live - Daho Aga - that's the Washasho Indian name for the place you probably know as TA HOE!!!

We used to have a town called Nothing here in Arizona: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?tip_AttractionNo==87 It seems to have gone by the wayside, however, which is no surprise. Come to think of it, though, we do have a town called Surprise in Arizona, too.
