Can't get a recliner to go back together

It is part of a sectional sofa. One part of the sofa was a Hide-a-Bed. The recliner has one arm. The brackets that connect the back to the seat are L shaped with a moveable bracket riveted just above the bend. Also, there are long straight brackets mounted to the frame that we think attach to the back. Every way we turn the L shaped brackets pushes the back too far away from the seat. Any idea what I'm talking about?
