I am willing to buy a PC workstation and use it to edit and composite videos and also for print design! I am thinking for a 2 x quad core cpu but I don't have any clue what's best for my work! Intel or AMD chip? What do you suggest and please explain why, thanks!

In terms of comparison with the chipsets, there is an obvious difference. Intel cost more, sure, but the reason behind so can easily be backed up by one undeniable statistic- clocking speed. Intel's newline of chipsets, as you mentioned, the CORE chipsets, are basically the Cadillac of all chipsets that are out right now, and are quite reliable. Making the arguement for, or against Intel and AMD can also be compared to the great Microsoft and Mac OS X debate. Let me just explain what the QUAD core CPU actually means, even though I am sure you are already aware. With the Quad Core, it is like having four seperate CPUs working together on one system, each taking on a new task producing lightening fast results. The only problem is, you will have to be sure that you have enough memory in order to truely get the power out of a CPU that is that powerful. With the AMD, they are known to have different compatibility issues. For one, they are known to have wireless connection issues with laptops or computers that have their screensavors up. Let me just put it like this- the Quad Core is quite expensive, yes, however you will be sure to get your bang for the buck. Hoped that helped.

Just to add to bstinson1989's response, Intel chips use faster cache than AMD, and more of it. Intel chips are also going to keep getting faster than AMD, because AMD is stuck in the 65nm realm (this means electricity has a longer distance to travel in AMD's chips). They're outsourcing development, and you know none of those third parties can touch 45nm, much less 32nm which is Intel's next move.
Worse, keeping up with quad cores, as well as the materials required to make 45nm and smaller chips cost money; money that AMD no longer has. The company is now worth less than they paid for ATI, which itself is being crushed by Nvidia. Intel has more than 32 times the money AMD has.

Although I comment talos82's response, this goes to everybody!
Thanks guys for your answers, I rated them all, I find them very helpful.
(I'll mark best response in a couple of days).
My favorite workstation was (a long time ago) SGI because it could handle the best video composition software, Flame! I did some research at discreet's site and found that the new version of Flame will run on 2xdual Amd Opteron, Linux based!
This, changes a lot my perspective and I'll do some extra research (although the application is way to expensive for me to buy it).
Also i thought it's better to switch to Mac, but on the other hand I can run MacOsX in my brand new quad core PC. It's a hard decision, don't you agree?

I will recommend you choose AMD.Because with your type of work AMD has an edge over intel.When it comes to multimedia , AMD rules out intel.There are also other advantages with the AMD system ;
-It is cheaper than intel
-Replacement cost is also very low
You can check the officail AMD website to compare the two brands.It will give you more to decide which one to choose.

I think AMD is better than Intel in mainstream and low end market
Because the amd cpu can be equiped with cheaper motherboard than intel's,we can spend less total money getting equal performance which intel cpu has.however,in the high end market ,t is totally different.The intel's cpu is more worth buying.The conclusion is concluded from Tom's Hardware article.i hope it is helpful for you

i agree with the above. AMD's are a newer technology than intel and are a lot more reliable in terms of high end work and production. I would prefer AMD over intel for myself as i too do a lot of high end production in print and webdesign, video editing etc. The plus side to an AMD is the cost as mentioned above too. They are relatively cheaper depending where you buy it. Theres always a store ready to jip you off with a markup so high its amazing.
