Do You Have A Locking Gas Cap?

Or a locking gas door? I have a locking gas cap. I had to buy it as one didn't come with my car. Even though the thing can be a pain in the butt to get open LOL, I feel more secure having one, especially with the possibility of gas thieves that go around stealing gas out of peoples cars. My husband's truck on the other hand has a locking gas door. I like it better as it is easier for me to get it open with the key. :P So, do you have a locking gas cap on your vehicle(s), or a locking gas door? Or do you not worry about such things and have neither? Please share your thoughts. :)

I have the locking gas cap on one car and my other car has a gas door that must be popped like the hood. Both of these came with the car so I am not really worried about it.

no, though I am thinking of buying one. my husband said at work a few weeks ago the bell rang for lunch and a man was seen running down the street - along side of one of the worker's trucks was found a gas can and a siphon hose. guess he ran off forgetting his tools. wonder how many vehicles he siphoned from before the bell sounded and scared him away. I think that a locking door (ones that do not lock with a key especially, but have a trigger release inside the car) can be easily pried open.

I have neither. The cars are really old. Hubby works at the county jail, and so does not worry about someone stealing gas there. I work at a school in the daytime. The questionable thing would be where I park for my night Job. The job itself is not a problem, but I park near a low income apartment complex. I tend to not worry, though.

I've had both and personally I preferred a locking gas door that can only be opened from inside the car. It is much easier to use and its faster at the pump.

Yes we have one, my husband had to get it, not because someone may steal the gas, but he works with some crazy co-worker to where we wouldn't put it pass them to put soemthing into the gas tank.. Unfortunately, when he first got the locking gas cap, he didn't bother giving one to me. So when he was admitted to the hospital from his place of employment a couple of years ago and I had to have a friend drive me to his work to get the car, I had to put in more fuel. Our friend had to break the cap for me to fuel up, so we had to get another.. So if you have this locking gas cap, maybe make sure both you and your husband has a key to all locking caps, just in case..

No I kinda which that I did because if someone pours sugar down your tank like my aunt had, it is not good at all and I wish more car companies did this because it isn't that hard to push a button before coming outside to fill your tank, right?

I had one on my car, until someone tried to break it off to get the gas out. They didn't succeed, because when we looked at it, it looked like it was all together, but come to find out the person had only managed to break off the top part of the cap. Hubby had to use two sets of pliers to undo the locking mechanism to get it off the car so we could fill it up. Now I have the old non-locking cap on there until I can get a new locking one. It makes me uncomfortable, but it's better than nothing I guess.

Oh that sucks Katlady! But I'm glad whoever tried to get the gas out wasn't able to. Maybe you can use your earning from here to buy a new gas cap that locks? Just a thought. :)

bmw z-4 - A picture of a BMW Z-4. Mine is black this one looks to be blue.
One of my cars has a locking door the other does not. The weird part is that the one that does not is my BMW Z-4 while the one that does is my Hyundai. I don't know if there is any relevance to this or not.

LOL, I don't even have a gas cap of any kind at the moment...yeah I know that's a bad thing...step son lost it and we haven't found a new one for it. We've never had anything that had a lock on it...like the kind we'd need a key for., but we have had a few that we had to pull a lever inside the car to get the gas door open...so if the car itself was locked then no one could steel gas easily. We have had gas stolen from us so it probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to have locks for ours but it was a family situation so we just kind of let it go...and it's a good thing because now the situation is reversed and the family member that was so broke he needed to steal our gas is in a much better position financially and very well may be helping us out.

No gas cap of any kind? How do you keep the gas from spilling out?

Ummm...by not tipping the car on it's side.... :) Actually, it the way it's designed plus help from gravity. Gas isn't going to run upward out of the fuel tank and back up the filler hose and then out the little trap door that opens inward. The gas cap is there more to help with fumes and keep water or other things from getting in the gas tank.

I have to disagree somewhat. My husband had forgotten to put the gas cap back on after a fill up. Once we got back on the road someone driving next to us yelled out that fuel was gushing out of the little side door. We rolled down the window to hear them better and oh my gosh, it smelled so strongly of gasoline! My husband pulled over right away and put the cap back on. We lost a good amount, maybe 1/4 of the tank.

Hello sacmom! Happy New Year to you! Most cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. since the late 80s have an anti-siphoning check ball in the filler pipe. This prevents hoses of any size from entering the fuel cell. To see if any of your vehicles have this, just cut a 3' length of hose (or if you're really good at being careful, unfold a metal coat hanger), insert it into the filler pipe and see if it gets wet. Be sure that the tank is notably less than full. If you get a wet hose (or hanger), you do not have this feature and a locking cap is advised. In answer to those mischievous devils who like fuel pranks, I am torn about whether to have a locking cap. The less diligent ones will be deterred by its presence, but the more malicious ones will damage the keyhole out of spite and now you're screwed anyway. Because I have the check ball, I've elected for now to use a non-locking cap.

We, my hubby and I, both have a locking gas cap on our vehicles. Your right about it being a pain in the butt, especially in the winter and it's freezing cold out. Mine doesn't open too easy. I always fill up at self serve gas stations because it is a lot cheaper and at the price of gas these days a person has to save where they can. I think my lock isn't good though, because my hubby's opens easier than mine, so I think there is something wrong with it. I have been very tempted to just break the lock. I am not all that worried about anyone stealing my gas. I don't hear of such a thing around here anymore, not like I used to a few years ago.

Wow, you mean to say there are still full serve gas stations in some parts of the world? LOL I remember the last time I saw one was back when I was a teenager. I haven't seen one since. :P You are right, one doesn't hear about such things nowadays, but I'd rather not take any chances. :P

I have a gas door that has to be opened with a lever from inside the car. Unfortunately the release mechanism has broken and I have to prop the lever up with my shoe and then wench the gas door open with a screw driver.

That's awful Shellfish! It makes me glad I don't have that type of lock! I couldn't imagine going to so much trouble to get the gas door open.

My car is really pretty old and it does have a locking petrol cap under a door that is only supposed to be able to be opened from inside the car! My partners car which is a bit newer has the same type of door but no locing cap underneath - I do think all petrol caps should be fitted with locks - just for security! xxx

I have both. With the high price of gas, more thieves are prying open the little gas doors to siphon gas. I also keep only about a quarter tank of gas unless I am going on a long trip.

lol I didn't know that they have cars without locking gas caps. All my cars have had locking gas caps. My old car I had to use a key. My current car there is a lever inside my car that I have to pull in order for the gas cap to come off.

Yes I do have a locking gas cap on my mini-van and I prefer those than one with a locking gas door - I find it too time consuming and wouldn't know how I would react if I actually lost my gas door key.
