Need new harddrive

I think I need a new harddrive in my laptop. Do I have to get the same kind, or can I get a newer, better harddrive? I have a Toshiba Satellite, A60/A65 series. If I get a new harddrive, can I still use my recovery disk to format it? Keep in mind I know just enough to be really dangerous around advanced electronics.

You have to use a hard drive with the same connection type, but you can upgrade, and brand doesn't matter. And yes, as long as you're using the new drive with the same machine, you can use your recovery disc. You say you know just enough to be dangerous around electronics; are you familiar with drive imaging? That would make you even more dangerous. If you have an external hard drive, or know how to split your local disk into two partitions, you could save an image of your operating system, then burn it to CD/DVD later. You could even split the backup into multiple volumes, in case the whole thing won't fit on one disc. Then, you could pop the new drive into your machine, format it, and "restore" the images onto the new drive. Of course most backups are not bootable; you still need the boot media for the backup program. But there are ways to get around this. For example, you could create two partitions on the new drive, load a temporary operating system, save the backups from CD/DVD onto the second partition, boot back into the drive imaging program, "restore" the image, and voila! If you have an external drive, it's even simpler.

You lost me at 'drive imaging'. Half the time my laptop boots up just fine. Then I get this blue screen with lots of text basically telling me my computer was all messed up. Then when I try to reboot, I get :\ No Bootable CD in ATAPI CD-ROM Intel UNDI, PXE 2.0 (build 082) Copyright .... For REaltek RTL8139CX/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE Rom Press any key when ready I kept getting that and couldn't get any further (this has been going on for days) so finally tried my recovery disc. It said Recovery - size of hard disk was unaquirable. Does that sound like my hard disk is fried?

It's possible, but from what you're telling me, your optical drive is the one that has my attention right now. Have you tried removing the optical drive? And what does the blue screen say? This might tell me more.

I read your response too quickly; I take it back. I don't think there's a problem with your optical drive. It's the hard drive, but it might just be disconnected. This happens with laptops every now and then (not frequently, but it happens). The drive is not held in place with screws, like it would be in a desktop. The IDE and power connectors actually hold it there, and it can come loose. Try disconnecting the drive by sliding it away from the pins, then pushing it back in again. See if that helps. If not, your hard drive has probably failed. This would explain why the computer is cycling for boot media, failing to find bootable media in the optical drive, and failing to find a server to connect to (PXE-E61: Media test failure.check cable).

If you would like to keep all of the same information on your old hard drive, as that of the new hard drive, then what I would recommend doing is using Norton Ghost. Now, Norton Ghost is an imaging software which can make a absolute copy of your old hard drive, and put it onto the new one. It is quite simple to use actually. If you have any questions, then just leave me a comment underneathe this response.

That sounds like something worth looking into. Right now it is working, and I got all I needed off it onto a flash drive. So I'm just working with it to see how long it works, etc.
