personally i would rather give a gift to a child. And apart from newlyweds who always need money if they don't have a gift register, and new parents who need lots of liquid cash also since there are so many expenses for the new baby, I would not give money otherwise. In my culture, it is sometimes acceptable to give money in red packets regardless of the age and the occasion. For instance, I could even give my parents money for their birthdays. However, for friends and children, I would much rather buy them a gift. it shows that some thought has gone into the present. Also, it shows that I know them well enough to know what they would like. Personally, a well thought of gift, and an appropriate gift that I really like is more meaningful to me if I receive it compared to money, even though i can use money any way i like.

i think giving a gift is better than giving cash money because giving a beutiful gift means that you give them not just a material but showing love to them.money will be spent and everyything forgotten, while giving a gift will make them remember your love and care for them.its my opinion.i dont know how you people think.

It depends on. I like to give gift for other's birthdays, Christmas. However, I always give money to celebrate other's wedding. As it is too difficult to find a suitable gift for the marriage. So money is the best gift as they can buy whatever they like.

i agree that it is really difficult to find a suitable gift for marriage. my cousin got married last august and some of the gifts are the same. some of our relatives wait the event to finish before buying the couples gift so they can make sure they wont give something that they have already. thanks for ther esponse

it really depends... if i have a hard time looking for a gift, i give money instead... but when i give something in kind, i make sure that it is something of great value. something that the recepient can use. for example, i love giving books to children. or, if i do give toys, i give those that are educational...

I give a gift on Christmas because that is what people usually do. But I would rather give cash then they get to get whatever they want and if they want to save the money they can do that too. That is what we do for Chinese New Year we give cash ...so I get to do both...hehe...

I rather give gifts to most people. They will remember it and they'll forget the money you gave them. But I'll give money gifts to my brother but that's about it.

I usually get gifts for the kids. But there are certain kids who prefer money. If I know that they are the kind of kids who wouldn't mind one gift less to open and would like to buy what they wish with the money, I would give money. There are very few 7 year olds (that I know) who would prefer money, though. I have gifted cash on two occassions - when that child gifted money on my son's birthday (so I knew that the child's mother wouldn't mind when I didn't get a gift and would give money instead) and when the child's mother called up in the morning for a party to be held in the evening. I couldn't go out and get a gift; so I gave money.

that is true when you get a late invitation for a party and no time to go out and buy a gift, giving money is better than no gift at all. thanks for the response

I's rather give gifts because they're more fun for me to buy than just sticking money in a card, especially if I know the person. But I think money is more useful to the giver.

money is more useful yes, for sometimes we dont know if they will use the gift we gave or just recycle it and give it to others. thanks for the response

hi roni! ^__^ i always prefer to give gifts than to give money. its very rare that i give money and that's only when i forgot to buy a gift for that certain kid. just like last year, i forgot to buy a gift for one of my godchildren and when she arrived at our doorsteps at Christmas last year with her mother, i was so shocked because of the stupidity that i made. LOL i hurried upstairs, got an envelope and put some money inside and gave it to her. ^__^;; i think that its better to give gifts than to give money. with money, i wouldn't know where they would use it. i wouldn't know if they would give it to their parents or if they would spend it wisely or worst, if they would spend it on some trash. with gifts, i am definitely sure that they would be able to use it for a long time and would benefit them as time passes by. ^__^ and besides, its fun to shop for gifts and wrap them by my own hands. ^__^

It depends on the person I am giving the gift to. My boys love to shop, so they prefer cash or gift cards. Other people prefer the thought you put into the gift. I like to please the person I am gifting.

No, I don't think money is better than gift in usual. Gift is a thing select by our thorough, money just money. By the way, In China, the fathers send the red pager containing money as a gift to children at festavel, means to ward off evil spirits. So at that time, money is better than the gift.

I always find it difficult to decide on this, even if I know the person. Much more to my love ones. But if I can't really decide then I'll give a cash or gift card. Maybe it's an excuse or escape for me to the real wonder of giving gifts. Although, if continuing to do this cash giving instead of gifts turn into a habit, then the fun of spending some time finding, wrapping and giving presents would be missed. I sure miss it.

This past holiday season my husband and I opted to just cash out the gifts and we did not go through the tedious way of shopping of gifts anymore. The only thing is, I felt that wrapping gifts was part and parcel of the holiday season. I felt as if some thing was missing when I did not wrap the gifts anymore. But the good thing is, we did not go through the stress of the hustle and bustle of shopping and hunting for gifts.

I would rather give money because what if I buy something and then the person doesn't like it? I would rather give money or gift cards so that they can use it and buy whatever they like.

that is one of the reason i have in mind to on why i should give money rather than gift. thanks for the response

i would rather prefer to give money so that the person can buy what he likes and use it or enjoy it more effectively. although giving a gift creates a suspense for the receiver but it can actually end up either in an excited state or in a depressed state.because after opening the gift one comes to know its utility.therefore i would prefer to give money....
