Hi: I am interested in designing and creating my own website. I have no prior background in this, but have used computers at work for years.
My primary question is: Does anyone out there know of any particularly good books on web design? I'm looking for something that I can read, follow the instructions, and create my own website.
Any feedback re these 3 books???
Web Design in Easy Steps, by Richard Quick (2007)
The Design of Sites: Patterns for Creating Web sites (2nd Edition), by Douglas Van Duyne, Landay & Hong (2006)
Web Design for Dummies (2nd Edition)(2006)

Welcome to myLot =)
One thing i would suggest when it comes to webdesign is as much as you read, no matter where, you will only learn by doing. This is where i'd suggest to you that instead of only reading the books, check online sources as well. Tutorials and working examples are always present to help you out and forum members always lend a helping hand to specific subjects.
Areas to start out for sure are html and images. If at first you can put those two together, you can have a modern website with minimal coding issues. Later on you can expand to css javascript flash and various other languages.
A couple site's i would suggest to get you started are :
www.w3schools.com
www.good-tutorials.com
www.htmlforums.com
Those three places should do lots to help you at least get started. If you'd like, personal message me for any other help you need or other sources. I havent learned by many books but i feel they are less beneficial than actually doing it and seeing what happens as you go. Its the best way to gain experience WHILE learning.

I would suggest you to learn only basic things first from good sites like www.htmlcodetutorial.com. And then start making web pages. You can only improve by doing so do more, experiment more. Show us your good work.

I too love web desinging. Earlier I had no interest in it but slowly I got to know a lot about it and now I am crazy about web desinging, animations, logo designing etc. I did not hire any tutor to teach me how to make websites but I just learnt it from the internet. I took me one year to become a professional and now I make websites for people. I don't know much about the books that you have mentioned but I can give you a website address where I got to learn some really good things about web sites. Maybe you can give it a try too. Its www.webmonkey.com
This site is very helfull and I am sure you will learn some things there.

I love webdesign myself, and am totally self taught. I would suggest learning the basics of HTML barnes and noble sells books that can help you with that. If you are a more visual learner as well, I suggest investing in photoshop and dreamweaver. Both are wonderful programs I do all my graphic design and weblayout in photoshop then import it into dreamweaver. It saves me a lot of hassel gives me a very streamline look and allows me to see what its going to look like. Dreamweaver also has a function that allows you to switch between the code and the visual of what it looks like, as well as an option to split it into two screens so you can see them both as once. Another great site to learn as well is called www.lynda.com it has wonderful videos, and tutorials on anything you could want to learn
