What do you do with old but good clothes

We are about to embark on another year, so its time to get rid of the old and start afresh with the new. I am getting rid of the dress clothes I have been holding on to for a while. Since I am retired I see no reason to keep all those suits, blouses, skirts, and dresses in my closet. They aren't even my size anymore... Some are almost new, what I mean is they haven't been worn more than 2 times. Not that they were recently purchased. Anyway I was wondering: Do you keep clothing that you know you will never wear again? What do you do with these good clothes?

Now that's really a good and generous way to get rid of your good clothing. My daughter just said "Give them to the Women's Shelter". Think that's what I will do.

If they are still good I either sell them on ebay or at a garage sale.

Sometimes I'll pass them on to someone who can put them to use...other times I'll give them to the Salvation Army (we do that at least 2xs a yr) and as of late I have been reconning them (reconstruction)..In fact I'm doign that today :-D....More expensive items (like this gorgeous geisha dress I had) I'll sell on Ebay..

Another great discussion! I try at least once a year to go through my clothes that I have either outgrown (LOL) or know I will never wear again and get them bagged up. I make my kids do the same thing. Once they are bagged up my husband will take them to the Salvation Army or if we know of a needy family in our community that can wear them we will give them to that family. SheliaLee

I have the same problem. I have a lot of business clothes that I'm never going to wear again. As a matter of fact, I was just telling my husband last night that I'm going to try and sell them on ebay. What ever I don't sell will get donated to Goodwill.

Usually, clothes that don't fit me or clothes i no longer wear i give away. Whether its to donations like the food/clothing banks or to someone who might need it i know (hand me downs) that's how i usually get rid of them. Most of the time its a handmedown to one of the family friends with younger kids. I fill up garbage bags with things and let them sort through the stuff they want then the rest goes to donations.

That's a good thing you are doing. There is always someone who may need these good pieces of clothing.

I usually give it to my maid or their family. I also give away good clothes to charity. My son's school donates clothes and toys that we send to the SOS villages. It's usually done aroundChristmas or New year's. So, I usually put all the stuff I need to donate in a box and send it over to the school. One weekend, a few interested parents, kids and the school staff go over to the SOS village and donate the clothes. I also used to volunteer to help sort the clothes and toys at the school. I was shocked to see that some people sent tattered clothes (ones that I wouldn't use as rags) and broken toys (which weren't safe).

When I go through my clothes I give them away to people I know that can use them or either I take them to CVAN. CVAN is a place where you take clothes, household goods, etc.. and they sell the stuff you donate and they give the money to the battered women's shelter. I like the idea that my clothes are helping someone out that needs help. I also take my son's clothes to a consignment shop. He is 19 months and is growing like a weed so he is in his clothes no time before he's outgrown them already. So I take them there to consign and then the money I make off them I re-use to by more clothes for my son.

If I have any clothes that I know I am not going to wear anymore I send them to our local thrift store. Years ago I used to keep all of my clothes- I would gain weight and think well I will keep them for when I lose the weight. That worked for a few years but it doesn't work anymore. So as soon as I am done with the clothes off they go .

Happy New Year ! In my opinion ,I think you can give these old clothes which you would never wear again to the people who are very poor ,they don't have any clothes to wear or the clothes are too old to wear .Especially in the new year time.

well if you are feeling optimistic, you could try sellng them in big lots of clothing on ebay, or a local paper. But that's usually too much work for me. So i tend to either give them away on freecycle (www.freecycle.org), which is an AWESOME place to give away/find kool stuff that you need/want. Or if no one wants to come and pick the stuff up from freecycle, then i usually try to find a way to cart it all down to the local second hand store so that someone else can use it and it doesn't go to waste :) It also helps out the community because the second hand store is a nonprofit store that the proceedes go towards helping people find jobs, and affordable housing and that sort of stuff :)

Many of the things I don't wear anymore go to various charities. My most recent box of castoffs are going to an orphanage my sister is involved with in Guatamala. There are a few pieces I continue to hold onto though. I have in mind to make a memory quilt using some of my favorite pieces. I just haven't figured out the best size to cut them into.

I always take mine to the goodwill or other community service. There was a lesson in Sunday school (back when I used to go ^_^;) that I will never forget. A lot of people take the clothes that are no longer any real good or in style anymore to the Freestore, while they keep the good clothes to themselves, even if they can't fit or won't wear them anymore. This isn't what God wants from us. He wants us to give our best because he gave us his. So when I go through my clothes, and find stuff that I can't wear or won't wear anymore, I give it a second look. If it is in good repair, and looks like something that would be worn today, I give those to these services.

Check to see if there is a freecycle group in your area. People are always looking for clothes on the group. Go to www.freecycle.org and search to see if there is a group in your area. Then join it. You will be surprised how many people will take your clothes. There is always a mom going pack into the workforce, etc. I need to do the same thing. I have tons of business clothes from before I had kids, I will never get down to a size 4 again plus I have no where to wear these clothes. So my new year goal is to freecycle them to give them a new life.

Goodwill! I basically live in that store and if your clothes are in good condition that that's where I would take mine. Plus, you get a tax right off if you do it before the 1st of the year.
