My response to this only varies in the specific details about the company. For starters, I always check out the company web site and basically memorize it. Then, when I'm hit with that question, I can say, honestly, that I've researched the company carefully. I find three specific things about the company that relate to the job I'm applying for and show how their needs will be met by me being in that position. Then I end with, "So to answer your question specifically, I knew as soon as I started researching your company that I wanted to work here. The way I see it, working here would be a win/win situation: you get someone who knows A, B and C walking in the door, and I get the privilege of working for a company who shares my vision on all fronts and will have placed me in the position of being able to use all of my existing skills and develop new ones along the way."
One last thing: ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS sell yourself as an asset to the company FIRST. "Having me work for you will benefit YOUR COMPANY because _________." NEVER, EVER lead with how badly you need the job or anything of the sort. They don't care about your needs, they care about thiers. You want to work for company X because of what YOU can do for THEM, not because of what gainful employment will do for YOU.

Man I hate that question. I usually end up blabbing some such bull about what a fantastic company they are and how they are so well respected in the field and how I would be honoured to work for them and help them stay up there as I have so much talent and enthusiasm I would be the perfect employee for them.
Ditto Vera below - because I need the money.

I usually say something about how great the company is and that I see great potential in the company and for my future with the company. I of course am usually lying through my teeth though. The truth would be in some cases because I need a job and this one will be easy to get.

i typically answer something about how i think i can really contribute a lot to the position...i really hate the question, because you can't usually answer with the truth: because i like to have a roof over my head, my family needs insurance, and it would be nice to make enough to pay my bills on time.
