everyone! its 30minutes past 12 midnight here as i am writing this discussion amidst the noise outside and the cold wind blowing. ^__^
my mother just asked me to hang grapes by our windows and doors as part of our tradition every time New Year is approaching. we were late this year. ^__^;; my mother forgot she had grapes in the fridge. LOL anyway, it is said that hanging grapes would attract more luck for the whole year. the grapes would stay by our windows and doors until it withers or until no one is eating them. LOL
so what are some of your New Year's traditions there in your place?

The grape tradition sounds very interesting. Hope it works well for you and your mother.
Actually we don't have any traditions persay. Most often we go out to eat and then either to a house party or back home. We don't go outside and bang pots and pans or do anything special.

LOL we had a neighbor like that too!! he would not only bang aluminum caldrons and other kitchen utensils but he would also run with the utensils tied behind him so it would really create a very loud noise!!! ^__^;; i think he has moved years ago because we don't see that man anymore.

We have none what so ever. Closest thing to it is an event being held by other people around town. But I wouldn't call that tradition at all because it was completely different every time around and sometimes it didn't happen. I never heard of hanging grapes in the house though, thanks for that little bit of extra knowledge. ;D

hi arkadus! ^__^
i'm happy to share our simple tradition. i'm glad some people thinks its interesting. we also prepare a set of different round fruits. it has to be round because it would represent money and luck for the year ahead. ^__^
happy new year to you!

Hello my dear secret bear friend. I wish you good luck all the year round. It is interesting to know that grapes are hanged by the windows and doors to bring in good luck. I will go and buy some when I have time to get out on the street and do the same accordingly. lol.
Ok, usually we put on the wall next to the big door and on the door some nice and encouraging words written on red paper to bring in good luck to the new year. This is our usual practice. Thanks so much for your new discussion. Happy New Year and Good luck to you all.

hi william! ^__^
your discussion is so like Chinese! well, i really don't know anything about Chinese tradition but when i read that you hang red paper with encouraging words, the red paper made me think of Chinese. ^__^;; i think its because they love red because they consider it as a lucky color. ^__^
@secretbear (19448)

is there any history about why you consider red as a symbol of luck? coz i only know that red symbolizes love, passion and bravery. ^__^

Yeah, red is considered to be lucky color in our culture. When we are going to attend a wedding party, we also put money in the red paper envelop. Thanks, dear friend.

This is my first new years off in 15 years. Prior to that I was in a terrible marriage and new years was just a bad time. Tonite my fairly new boyfriend decided to spend the holiday with friends that niether of us really know. I am here by myself and thinking that I really don't like this holiday much at all.

I have never heard about this grapes thing.. NEVER EVER! lol i think its kinda cool, but kinda silly too! Why would grapes bring you good luck ? Maybe she just wants some raisins! *giggles* Interesting tradition though secretbear, I like to learn about other people traditions. Where do you supposed this tradition stemmed from ? Like cultural background or whatever ?

for one, grapes are round-shaped, and round-shaped fruits are said to bring good luck, particularly financial luck. ^__^ and then hanging them in windows and doors, since windows and doors are openings of a house, the grapes would guide the luck to enter into these openings. ^__^
that's all i know. ^__^

We have many New Year traditions, or you can say superstitions here are some of them:
1. Before New Year's eve, we have to gather 12 kinds of fruits to be placed in our table, our folks believe that if we could gather 12 kinds of fruits (which symbolizes the 12 months of the year), we won't go hungry for 12 months. It is more good if those fruits were all round (a symbol of plenty in our country).
2. We should be wearing polka dot dress/clothes during the night to attract lots of money (coins)
3. We must fill all pockets and wallets with money, so that we will have money all year long and fill our refrigeratos, pantry, cupboards with food so we will have plenty to eat the whole year long.
4. We must open all door, windows and drawers so that the New Year's luck will enter.
5. We should serve Fish dishes, a native food (kakanin) called "Palitaw" during the New Year to attract luck for the whole year, and never serve chicken whic is believed that if we do, we will be searching and finding little of everything.

Hi secretbear,
I don't have any traditions, though my grandparents has because they are Chinese and my mother didn't made us follow it. Now that I have a kid of my own, I prepare foods, buy round fruits that my money can afford not 13 and buy little fireworks to drive evils. Thats it! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I don't know of any in my country, Canada, but I think it is more a personal thing than a country tradition. We don't, my hubby and I, have any traditions for new years. But I do like the grapes thing you do. I have never heard this before and I think it is cute.

The biggest New Year tradition my family does, which has lasted for about the past three or four years, would be going cosmic bowling. We would start at around 10 p.m. and keep going like two or three games until after midnight. I don't know if you're familiar with what all cosmic bowling entails, but it's such a blast. There are TVs in the bowling alley, so we would all stop bowling to watch the ball drop (and see all the couples kiss - YUCK! LOL) Then we'd continue our current game until we're done. That's about it. We always eat some really good food too! I don't think we're going to keep up that tradition this year, but who knows. Maybe it will work out. I guess it isn't much of a tradition if we don't keep it up this year, is it? Thanks for asking!

Hi there, Secret Bear, and thanks for best response! I'm sorry that I didn't make it clear about couples sharing their New Year's kiss - lol. In the U.S., couples usually kiss to celebrate the New Year. I suppose it's just an understood thing because of the tradition that so many couples have continued. Cosmic bowling is a blast. I hope you get to participate in it sometime!

we always welcome new year traditionally with prayers. All family members from parents to kids and grandchildren and relatives in the house when 12:00 midnight strike we all gathered , prayed to God and say thanks for the year that has pass and prayed for bless year to come . after that we greet and hug each other and share the foods that we prepare and enjoy the time see the fireworks outside and make noises.

I love it! Then the grapes become raisins, lol. My tradition used to be watching the New Year's Eve celebrations from Las Vegas broadcast on TV and wishing I were there, but now we live near there, so that is old hat. I love how quiet the whole "world" gets on New Year's day. Sometimes I like to drive around and enjoy the fact that the streets are completely clear of any cars or people. It is just so kewl.

There are a lot. But what I religiousl folows are attending mass and eating at exactly 12am. It is a day of obligation for us catholics. So attending mass is a must. Eating is part of the celebration as well as fireworks.
