Council stole my doormat.

Dacorum Borough Council stole my doormat and want to charge me £25 for its return. I had a beautiful doormat that sat outside my door in the communal lobby of the flat block in which I live. I received a letter from Dacorum Borough Council, saying that I must remove it as it was a fire hazard. I then exorcised my democratic right to check that what the council said was true. I contacted the portfolio holder for houseing and she wrote to me confirming that no advice regarding doormats had been received from the fire dept at the time. Thus I was engaged in negotiation to retain this mat when one day I found it had been stolen. I reported this matter to the police and the council informed me I must pay £25 for its return. I later discovered they are only charging other residents £15 for return of their property. A doormat being integral to my culture, being integral to a threshold it is enshrined in my culture by such practices as carrying a bride across a threshold. So I contacted the department of the council concerned with discrimination, aware as I was, that exceptions had recently been made by councils to general rules to allow local Muslims to enjoy their cultural practices. However, I was told that they would do nothing. Seems that Dacorum Borough Council are not only thieves but also racist. Anyone else experience theft, oppression and discrimination by their local council. all the best urban

Nope. Never have, but then, in general, our city councils seem a lot more reasonable than English ones. Sorry to hear that you've had such trouble, though I'm a bit concerned that you 'exorcised' your democratic right. Maybe that's the problem: you should have merely exercised it. Having exorcised it, you now have no democratic right left!

And a Happy New Year to you! Obviously you were so upset about the doormat, your sense of spelling went awry....

I cannot understand how they can ask you not to have a doormat - how will you clean your shoes before getting in the house? This is just outrageous - can they acctually steal your property and charge you for giving it back to you? Wow - that's crazy. Sorry that you have to go through such rubbish in order to have a simple doormat in front of your door and no, I still have not been faced with such dodgy behaviour from my council...yet!
