Psychology test: brain allways one step ahead; do we have a free will?

I read a very interesting article on the website of a Dutch psychology website that I wanted to share with you. I'll try and translate as good as I can below: ______________________________________________ "We do not have a free will" is stated by Mark Mieras, freelance sciencejournalist (that works for example for 'psychologie magazine", on you tube. Our brain allready knows what we intend to do before we know ourselves. On youtube Mark Mieras shows you how to do a simple experiment about free will. Make a fist and choose purely out of free will when to open your hand. Don't plan when to open your hand, this way your brain will know what you intend to do! Open your hand spontaniously. The weird thing is that no matter how hard you try to be spontanious, you will allways have the feeling you are late. This also is viewable with a brain scan. Brainexaminers can tell by the brainscan that your brain is making up a plan. They are allways a step ahead of you. What do you think? Dó we have a free will? Are our brains allways a step ahead of us? Is this a good thought or does it make you angry? ______________________________________________ I haven't included the link to youtube as the clip is also just the dutchman saying the same I translated above; and off course in Dutch (so a lot of the mylot readers here wouldn't have any use of it). I would love to hear your opinions! My personal opinion; I do think we have a free will. I think our brain acts through a signal given by our unconsius. So we dó decide, but not without full consius. If that were true, we all would go mental with all the simple decisions we make all through the day! So I guess to protect ourselves our brain makes some of the most simple choices for us based on our unconsius and/or intuition. This also explains why we do certain things when we are in danger (saving your child first or running into a burning building to save someone else), even though it doesn't prevent ourselves from getting hurt (which would be survival instinct). We put certain rights or savity of others above our own, our unconsius knows that and our brain gives the signal to our limbs to act instantly. That would be my explanition.

Your explanation is to be taken into consideration too,but what I think is that we are the ones thinking and deciding when to open the fist, it's just that from the time you start thinking it,and since the information from your brain gets to the fist and opens it, it's the exact amount of delay time that amazes you and you think your brain did it before you..but in fact..the brain did it before your body , the reaction has a small delay from since the brain activates it... or at least that is how I see things. It is anyway known that our brain is more than self-consciousness.. so it might sometimes think without us because when we reffer to 'us' we reffer to the consciousness,i think...but I am not sure if that has also something to do with the opening the fist thing:)

You have thought this over very well, and therefor I'm going to denote you best response. You've earned a lot of best responses on my discussions today helping me out resolving the onces that didn't get answers. I hope getting denoted best response will improve your earnings, I'm glad my list is getting shorter. Thanks!

I honestly didn't do so in order to get best responses..I obviously feel flattered each time i get one but i like to know i've earned it and deserved it..so you made me blush, but thank you. I always enjoy responding to discussion that actually have a meaning, and when i find a person with good ideas like yours i am interested in searching for anything that i could share an opinion on... and i even more enjoy to help getting the discussions back on track.. You know,it is true,it's nicer to give than to recieve.
