I just bought 2 small koi and I am keeping them in an aquarium. Dose anyone know they do in aquariums? Will they survive or do they need a lot of space?

Sure sir, koi will survive in aquariums and those are small too.. When they grow, make them get enough sunlight, some muddy water, some more space etc.

They might be alright for the first year gut then you will need to get them much larger quarters to live in. During the winter you could keep them in a kiddie wading pool in your garage or basement (if you have either). If you keep them in a kiddie wading pool you will need to put a net over them so that they will not jump out of it.

I have a 55 gallon aquarium. I hope that will hold them for a while. I also have a plastic pond that is about the same size. Do you think they will be be ok using the pond for summer and the aquarium for winter?

"KOI" one of my favorite fishes.Koi can quickly grow in size and appetite so I will advise you to place them in a larger tank or a pond(preferred) about 1.5 m deep. These are cold water fishes so if you have kept them in a place that you think is warm then place a meter to keep a check on water temperature. Also the the water needs to be cleaned / filtered on regular basis. You can keep them in a small tank but the fact is that they are suited to larger areas and will not grow well if kept in smaller tanks.

Your right, Koi do need a lot of water. I bought a book on them since I started this discussion. I do need a pond for them.

Since they can grow up to 4 foot long that means that they need a very large aquarium or pond for them to grow in. I have heard that the best koi come places where they allow 100 or more gallons per fish and that includes changing water regularly for them. Yes they might "survive " for a few years in a small aquarium but their life span can be over 300 years if kept right. It makes no sense to have an animals that you do not intend to give it their requirements to grow to maturity.

Thanks for the information on koi. It looks like I am going to have to get to work and build another pond. I had ponds at my other houses. I know what my spring project is going to be this year.
