I am a Customer Support Manager, and when I am hiring, one of the criterias of the successful interview is ability to work in team for the featured candidate. No matter, how bright engineer can be, he/she cannot be an expert in everything. Help, cooperation, and support is one of the most essential parts of the successful team performance. Especially in Field Service (Customer Support), when engineers work with customers on daily basis.

I work with engineers and find that they are not people oriented. I think that the more success ones are people people first and understand teamwork.

I have to disagree with you. Service engineers tasks are half-technical, half-communicational. No matter reliable the equipment is, service and maintenance are needed. For 1/5 million eqiupment, customer cannot afford to the equipment downtime. However, not always tool can be fixed immediately. Teamwork is needed to execute the task the most efficiently and to convince the customer that he is a "happy customer" with "excellent customer support".

Well I don't disagree with you. In the end results are what matter and even the most likable guy who can't fix anything is not going to have that job anymore.

Yes, it does require team work. I am part of management for a retail store. We get in huge truck loads every week. Also we have to do customer service, get promotional sales tasks done, and we do a re-set every month. Without team work, half of that would not get done. I work 11 hours a day and I am on the go the entire time but about 30 minutes of it.

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you to a point...individuality will still be valued in the future and teamwork should not erase that.
