My oldest entered a contest and won two tickets to the local team's hockey game (not the NHL team but the level under that, I'm not into hockey so I don't know what that's called). She was so excited when she received her tickets in the mail last Friday...until she saw that they were dated last Wednesday! We've made phone calls to the people in charge of the contest and they refuse to replace the tickets, they claim it's not their responsibility if they were delivered after the game. I understand that to an extent BUT it's not like they were being sent across the country and these people knew they would be going through the mail during the holidays. From where they were sent would normally take 2 days, three days tops. Judging by the dates involved and the postmark date, they were just plain irresponsible about getting them sent in time.
So my daughter missed the game...at which more prizes were supposed to be awarded to those in attendance with winning tickets. She is so disappointed. I've just sent a none too polite e-mail to the hockey team itself explaining the situation and am about to send another one off to the news station in that city. I'm hoping that someone will decide to do something about this.
Have you ever had a similar situation? Maybe not with hockey tickets but with a contest you won but couldn't use the prize due to the promoters' mistake? What steps did you take to get things fixed? Any other ideas on how to get something out of this?

So sorry to hear that and good on your for making a complaint because i would too if it happened to me or my family. Its their responsibility to get the tickets to you ON TIME and they should have - infact it should of been sent priority mail in my book!

I was thinking priority mail or perhaps not sent at all but held at the the ticket office to be picked up in person the night of the game...the letter to inform her of the win being sent priority mail still. I just finished the e-mail to the news station and am trying to think of any other places. I just don't understand how they could do that to a child and can't help but wonder if there are other disappointed children who didn't get their tickets in time either.

I hope we can figure out something too, she really wants to go to a game but buying tickets is a bit out of the budget which is why her winning this contest was so exciting.

Depending on where you live, you do need to be careful as to what news stations you send the information to. It is not common knowledge, but quite often, you find that it was the people who owns the company that held the contest may very well also own the local news station.
A long time ago, William Paley owned CBS - Columbia Broadcasting System, & that included several radio stations, a few cable stations (Viacom had to be sold because of him & Nixon getting into a disagreement & Nixon had the FCC make a new law that caused him to have to sell or close down something.) He also was the owner of the New York Yankees.
Anyway, posting your story is a great start. Maybe you should name names, such as who held the contest & sent the tickets out late. If it was the hockey team, it sure would make for some not-so-good publicity.

That is a very good point to keep in mind. With this one in particular the contest I believe was on the team's site itself, not that that guarantees the news station wasn't tied in somehow. She isn't home from school yet for me to get all of the information. The team is the Binghamton Senator's out of Binghamton, NY.
