Internet and TV

Whenever I tell people that I spend several hours a day on the internet, quite a few of them tell me what a waste of time it is or "get a life". Then I hear those same people discussing who was on American Idol last night or what happened on the latest "reality" show. An they say that I waste my time?! At least I'm interact with information, or with other people, using my brain. If you have a few hours to spare, I say its far better to be on the internet rather than absorbing mindless alpha waves while watching a show that was pretty much like the last one. Anyone else think that TV, as we now know it, is on its way out?

I know exactly how you feel about people thinking the internet is a waste of time but they can sit there mindlessly watching stupid TV programs for hours. I never watched a lot of TV before I got on the internet, but I watch almost nothing now.

My husband does that. He will sit in front of that one-eyed monstor all day long. Yet grips at me if I am at the PC for awhile. You know the old "all you do all day long is sit at that computer!". however, I stopped him one day by saying "I'll turn off the computer if you turn off the TV". Of course there has been no further conversation about the subject!!!

I agree with you in a way, although it's pretty hypocritical of them to say you waste your time on the internet all day yet they watch TV for idk how many hours, I feel it's better to be gaining knowledge than to be wasting away with it, when watching TV although some of TV does provide some factual information, I also believe that being on the Computer is more useful you can do more than 1 thing, Talk to Friends, Write Whatever, Go online and learn/improve reading skills, among other things you can even watch Movies and TV online as well as listen to Music, so I suppose the Computer is better in that sort of sense, however spending too much time on the Computer can be bad for you physically and mentally

we have broadband so I am back and forth from my computer all day... no one has ever said I spend too much time on it... and what is classed as too much time?? I think as long as you still get everything else you need to done them there is no problem at all :)

haha! That's the same thing my mother tells me. She wonders why I'm spending more than a couple of hours surfing the Internet, when there are other things to do. She says that my electricity bill will surely go way up with the way I use the computer. But I just explain to her that it's like watching TV, but with more useful information.
My mom is the typical woman who loves to watch daytime and afternoon TV soap operas. And the way she does it, she spends countless hours sitting and watching her favorite shows. I'm not a TV buff, and not really that so into internet surfing. I just spend three to five hours, the maximum length of time surfing the Net. But after that, I get eyestrain and a headache.

well i spend a lot of time just after marriage sitting infront of that idiot box.and to tell u the truth i just spoiled my eyes.watching TV and serials really makes one all the more tensed in life.after sometime i finally decided to give this stupid habit of mine and do something worthwhile.being on interent is far more better to me as comapred to TV since u can really learn a lot of things on it.one can read news and even learn something which might help in their career.

comparing TV and internet is like comparing apple and banana. i think some people prefer watching TV while some choose the internet. both have advantages that appeal to a variety of people. in my case, i watch TV to unwind my mind. i use the internet to communicate, interact, and engage in discussion. i see the uses of both medium.

I hate television ( and it seems everyone else is beginning to agree). The only time I watch it is when I need to vegetate...when I want to rest my brain and mindlessly laugh...and the only shows that are good for that are late night adult swim. Stupid, tasteless, off color jokes that make me laugh and decrease my intelligence.
I completely agree with you that at least on the internet you are interacting, learning, and may even challenge your intellect a little if you try. If not for the internet I wouldn't know a lot of what is happening around the world, I wouldn't know half the recipes that I do, and I would sleep a lot more out of pure boredom.
Let them have their pointless, mindless American Idol...hopefully their kids will evolve a little and the human race won't stay stuck in a sludge of mindless people that think watching reality shows is less of a waste of time then surfing the information highway...

TV could be on its way out, although I wouldn't want that to happen.I still watch 3 hours a day maybe, when there is an interesting movie or series.
I don't think you can watch Seinfeld or some documentary on your PC for example.
Anyway ,nobody told me to get a life just for spending time on the net. Most of the ones who say that are probably doing the same thing too.

This is why I don't care what other people think. And no, TV isn't on its way out anytime soon.
