Guess this is more about friendship than about new year's day...
I met an old friend on new year's day. she was in town and it was good catching up with her. we've known each other since we were teenagers.
but we realised that most things about us and our other friends that we've seen recently have not changed. and that is comforting!
As I grow older, I find that I like familiar things and people from my youth. Whereas when i was younger, I was always excited by new experiences, new friends, new places to travel to, and new things. Now the old things are what brings the most joy. Do you feel the same sometimes?

Perhaps this is to do with being jaded?
As we grow old, we sometimes become jaded. You should have long become jaded - but the current level of "jadity" is probably intensified. :P
Just enjoy yourself. Life is short, we don't know what *after* brings.

I dunno about being jaded. in some ways yes, in other ways i'm still bright eyed and idealistic.

I do agree with you that old things bring the most joy.
I have always like familiarity. But change is the only thing that is constant.
I have met up with many of my old friends and they have changed so much, we are not as close as we were before.
It is sad. But the good thing is, we still can hold a good conversation when we get together.
This reminds me, I have to make some appointments to gather some old friends for makan. ;)

It's interesting that you wrote this. I was just thinking about this very thing a few days ago.
The vast majority of the people in my life I've known for 25+ years. The next round of people I've known for approximately 12 years. The most recent were the last 5 years.
It seems that I go on a binge of meeting large groups of people at one time.
Granted, I meet people all the time, but when making introductions - I find myself saying, "I've known this person for X-amount of years now" and more often than not, they fall into one of those three categories.

i guess if the friendship has been retained all these years then there truly is something special there. :)
