Ice Jams On Roof

Okay one other thing I hate about the thawing temperatures is the melting of snow on the roofs causing ice jams. I usually try to remove the snow off the roof when possible. I climbed up on my roof yesterday trying to remove the snow but it was too slippery. I nearly fell. So I have to wait and hope it doesn't cause any damage. I am going to look for a snow rake tomorrow for the removal in the future of the snow. What I do is I buy the cheap pantyhose at the dollar store then get some ice melt salt pellets. I place the salt inside the pantyhose tying off the end. then I spread this out across the edge of the roof so it melts the snow & ice. What tips do you have or know to prevent ice jams?

We have Gutter Caps installed on our gutters so no more cleaning em out and no ice jams. Guarrentteed for life!! If the gutters ever get clogged, we just call them up and they will come out and clean em out for us. Been 3yrs now and they are still clean. Water just follows the cap down over the bend in the caps right into the gutters while debris just gets washed right off onto the ground. Best investment we've made so far to this house.

I've thought about that. But that doesnt stop the ice jams.
They form before the water reaches the gutters actually from
melting etc. The snow stops the water from running all the
way to the gutters. That's why I need a snow rake.
