Another one of those inexplicable mysteries of religion that gets swept under the carpet, or no-one seems to know of.
According to Roman documents written at the time of Jesus, while he was still alive. Jesus was certainly NOT of the appearance he is portrayed as being in this day and age.
Romans had a system of searching for criminals much the same as that used in the wild west by American Sheriff's. The wanted poster, complete with sketch of the individual being sought.
The Roman description of the individual, Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
Olive skin, one eyebrow, hunched back.
What happened here?????
It seems that glorifying desrciptions of Jesus are all after the fact by wishfull thinkers and powerful robe wearer's.
Hmmmm.

I have been to the region where Jesus (and for that matter Mohammed) lived. It is the Middle East. The people's skin is not white... it is not black (some are but not most). It is an olive color that is hard to describe to someone from the West.
For people in Europe it would be like your people from southern Spain and for the US the closest I can think of is someone from Mexico or Cuba (not the Carribean).
Remember that MUCH that has to do with Christianity (especially the Roman Catholic Church) was in Italy. WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Prodestants) and that is how they (the painters of the day) portrayed the likeness of not just Jesus but other characters of the Bible.
Does it rightfully matter? I doubt it. It doesn't matter to me... but for the record you are absolutely right... those pictures we have hanging on the walls with the rosary hanging from the corner... if that is the picture you have of Christ he could walk right up to you and you wouldn't even know it was him.

Thanks for your input zeloguy,
what you say is true. The reasons for the way things are now, are also true.
It probably doesn't matter like you say. But, It makes me think, what else is isn't quite right with anything else they tell us. I get annoyed with little things that can get big, even silly movies that are lacking in continuity or fact, arrgh, worse when they are attempting to be factual. e.g. the rocket takes off on it's way to the moon, here are the astronauts, (images of crew in capsule) and (here is the rocket leaving) a thor booster with a small satellite getting launched. Arrgggh. Not right, I say to myself. But that's just me.
It would probably be nice if he was portrayed closer to what we know, it might improve the lives of some unfortunate folk in a similar situation.

Back to religion, remember again the Roman Catholic church is the one who influenced EVERYTHING we know about religion today. Songs that were written as hymns in churches skew what is actually said and meant in the Bible.
As for other areas. Never take ANYTHING at face-value, there is always a manipulator out there that is running the show. For fear of a Negative on my reputation... if ANYONE thinks it is George Bush running the show in Iraq and that we are there to get Osama Bin Laden... (eye roll) they can be not be further from the truth.
Everything that any public speaker (well not EVERYTHING but a lot of things) are either pre-written by writers (spinmasters I believe they are called) or they are being piped into their ear or if when necessary (like during 9-11 when Bush was reading to children in a school... the secret service came to deliver the horrible news).
News agencies are slanted as are newspapers. The "Post" is notorious for being liberal... schools like Virginia Tech and Stanford (hmmm Clinton's daughter went there) are liberal schools.
Teach the facts like they actually were. We are finding even textbooks of our own American History is completely wrong. George Washington was a terrible battle leader, etc....
For everyone out there with just about everything, make up your own mind. That is what America allows us to do. (for us fellow Americans). Watch CNN, yes. But ALSO watch CNN INTL., BBC World News, and if you want to know the slant on the other side if you can get it Al Jazeera television and Israeali television. You may just disagree on what you hear but you will see what the other side sees and it may just open one's eyes to what is being said outside of America and our security blanket that has been made for us.

I am not aware of any independent authetic record of Jesus' existence. I've long thought the only record of Jesus' even having lived were suspect Christian records.
Could you give me a source for your information?

There are a few more if you start googling for Hunchback, one eyebrow, midget, Jesus, etc.
This was a bit like, I thought I'd heard it all before, then someone tells you about this, ahhhh.

Certainly a fascinating read. Those interested in church history should be sure to read it.

We had a guest pastor at our church and he was talking about Jesus and how his name meant Savior. He also said the Jesus or Joshua was a common name in those days, but if you want to thats JESUS, the son of God, is not really divine and has no power and is not sitting right now at the right hand of God, this is the way to do it.
The fact is that Jesus no doubt look like the Israelites in those days, not now when the origin strain has been mixed with European types, but more like someone I knew who was descended from the Jews who had been exiled to Babylon and still remained there until this day, dark hair, short, and with olive skin.
Besides if Jesus had been hunched back, the other Jews would have remarked, "Is this not the mishapen son of the carpenter and are not his sisters still with us?"
Also Jesus was not considered a criminal by the Roman Government only by the Pharisees and Saducees, so this is another Jesus. We are not supposed to know what Jesus Christ looked like. For all we know, him being from the lineage of David might have David's ruddy complexion and he might be a little taller.

Hi suspensful,
thanks for your coments.
What you have said is very valid, and I will of course spend the rest of my life researching history and religion, as we all will. I will certainly keep in mind what you have said. I'll try and see if there is anything anywhere more concrete to back up or refute the claims made regards Jesus' appearance, and the poster. I think the Muslim rule of never making an image to represent Mohammed is a wise one.
Cheers.

This is interesting. From what I know, modern scientists (this was once featured in the National Geographic station)were able produce an amazing portrait of Jesus Christ by basing it on the Holy Shroud of Turin. Anyhow, my faith continues and I'm least concerned on how really looked like in his time on earth. What is important is that he fulfilled His purpose and saved us believers from sin.

Thanks for dropping in and sharing your thoughts.
Muchly appreciated.
Allways trying to find truth, or something akin to it, as we all are.
If I come across stuff like this, I have to share it.
If I found some scientist had made a grave error, I would not keep quiet on that either.
The vatican denies the Shroud has the image of Jesus.
Are you saying the Holy See are liars?
The Vatican, telling fibs??
God apparently said Build me NO temples, pray to no idols, etc, sounds like all failed miserably. Folks believe the bits they want to, and subscribe to the clubs that go along with their own thoughts.
I am not a subscriber to any religion, I have faith in The Power, The Creator, The Life Force.
I believe the worlds population has been conned.
Yes, another "how come then" post.
The shroud is not old enough for it to have been the image of the person we call Jesus Christ.
Tested and proven.
The wanted poster comes straight from the people searching for him.
If the word of God had been adhered to, there wouldn't be splinter groups numbering in the thousands.
There wouldn't be churches.
There wouldn't be saints.
All sins according to the supposed word of God.
Whats worse, most of the religious world seem to know this, but there are as many reasons why they do it as there are splinter groups.
All arguments and theories graciously accepted.
