Are you feeling guilty if you've wasted time in doing something worthless?

Well, in the last few weekends, I just stayed at home and played some computer games, and didn't do any value added things at all. I did feel guilty after that. But I really don't know how to improve this situation. I found that as the time goes on, I am more and more lazy after work, I could even stay in the house doing nothing in a day except do some cooking. I truly hope I could totally change this situation so I have made my mind to come back to mylot and ask for some opinions to change my situation. So do you have some good ideas to spend the time colourfully? What shall I do to make myself feel better? P.S.:I have quite some interest in doing my job well during the work days. I just don't want to spend more time in my work during the weekend. So I decide to relax, but suppose I was doing a wrong way in the last few weeks. Andy

Well, time is important so we better spend it wisely. Anyway, playing video games is not much that bad. You had fun right so don't regret the time you've lost while playing. Its ok to have fun once in a while but to be lazy, thats another thing. When I feel like I'm wasting my time, I just sit for a while and think about a lot of things I could do. For example, look up some possible businesses I could invest in. Read some books or even talk with some friends who are into business. It really depends on what you like and how much you think it will add value to your life. Walking around the neighborhood may give you some ideas. Give it a try!

guilty? nope. angry yes! i am angry when i wasted my time on something that is not worth. if you feel tried then it is okay to take a rest because of a weeks work. but if you do that every weekends then i think the work you have is very stressful that all you want to do is to be lazy on a weekend. maybe you can spend your weekend on pampering yourself. get a massage or something that could take all that stress.

Doing something worthless is good for the soul. You do your 5 days work... and you rest. Some people think that they have to be doing things all the time... because life is short and not one minute must be wasted. But it is total non-sense. Life is what you make of it... and you should only do what's make you happy. Some watch television Others spend their time on the internet. Some go to the movies Some read a book Some go to the beach... etc...etc... If you really think about it... all the above are worthless. They are just relaxing occupations for people with different tastes. You are playing computer games because you cannot think of anything else which would make you more happy on that day. There is nothing to feel guilty about.

Couldn't agree with you more that every one of us should relax after work. Well, I still think I have a lot of potential to do everything better and I should pursue something more :) Anyway, thanks for your kind words and I will remember to enjoy the time with my family and friends when I am not working. Happy new year 2008! Andy

Well, I don't see anything wrong with relaxing during your days off. You worked hard during the week ,so you have the right to be lazy sometimes. If you want to do something productive you can always clean the house.

Hi,Andy! Your situation is same to me.I don't feel guilty at all but either I don't feel happy or enjoyable.I think I need relax on weekends but actually,I spend most time on playing computer games and surfing online. And the result are my neck is so tired and my eyes are full of tears(if you stare at the screen for a long time, you'll find your eyes are full of tears.) Of course,go shopping also make me tired.Sometimes, when I come back home without buying anything! I'm considering whether I should join an exercise club and practise on weekends.

No never. I have done a lot of worthless things in my lifeā€¦more of them really, less of the meaningful pursuits. But I have never regretted any of them. Now sometimes if I spend a holiday reading a book or just sleeping, I sometime feel guilty coz of the piled up chores, but the next instant the guilt is gone. The chores will always be there, the holiday will come again maybe after 6 months. Similarly, all our lives we will be chasing dreams and their fructification but spring will come only once in each of our lives. This day will be ours only for this day. So no matter how silly, do (at least once in a while) what your heart tells you to and not the head.

Everybody needs relaxation. We can explode if we are serious and usefull all the time.We need some laziness, some pleasant even worthless hobbies...our mind and emotions need to release themselves, not to concentrate only to work and important home activities. So please, dont blame for it. For me the good book, film or conversation with a friend are allways good way to feel better. Can you call it "waste of time"?:)

Hi Magica, Thanks for your msg. I used to read a lot and meet some friends but now I don't often do it. Do think that watching a good film and reading some good books is a good relaxation. Surely they are not a waste of time. I have spent quite some time in the last few nights to surf the net and also play some games, I suppose I should have spent those times elsewhere such as chatting with my family, friends etc. Rgds, Andy

Thanks, and I do think it's not a waste of time mylotting.:) I don't bring work to home often, but sometimes I have to since there are quite some things to deal with in peak season. Now everything becomes normal, and I could have pretty much time to spend with myself. I am going to plan how to spend them now. Andy

Hi Andy...you should really not be so hard on yourself. It's good that you enjoy your work but it's not good that your conscience troubles you when it's time to relax. There are many things you could do but maybe only a few options that would hold any real appeal for you. Because you work in an office, I believe that primarily, you should get some fresh air and exercise. Even a walk round the block or araound a park can be beneficial. Perhaps gardening would interest you; if you enjoy cooking you could have a vege garden or a herb garden. The thing to do is limit your time spent sitting watching tv or playing on the computer and enjoy more active pursuits. All the best to you.

Hi Ms Tickle, Thanks for your kind comment. I suppose I am a little bit hard on myself as well. But I do think I should have spent sometime to learn something more valuable so that I could be better in both my job and life in future. Andyway, thanks for the good words, and I think I could manage it in the end. Wish you the best! Andy

hi andy! ^__^ that happens to me a lot. i work five days in a week and whenever i go home, i would want to rest and rest only and i would spend my weekend leisurely watching tv or surfing the net. nice of you that you still cook a little. me? i don't even boil water! LOL but as much as i want to rest, like you i would feel like i've wasted time for not doing something important, so i would try to do something worthwhile. i would remove weeds from our garden, wash some of my clothes, clean some mess in my room, or just play with my nephew and make him happy. ^__^ maybe you can do some of your hobbies that are beneficial not only for you but for others. ^__^

Thanks for your sharing.:) It makes me feel better knowing that maybe quite some people are doing the same thing during the weekend. I did some laundry today as well. Hope I could be with my GF every weekend, but she is still studying in school and will graduate soon in coming June.:) Andy

Do you think this could be the time of the year....weather related? I know that with the lack of sunshine, my interests/energy levels dip! Please don't beat yourself up with guilt, maybe you just needed some "down-time," to recharge your batteries! What I have done, is make a list of things I want to accomplish, (& it takes some talking to myself to get motivated,) but when I have completed some of these tasks, I then feel good & invigorated. Sometimes I just have to "jumpstart" myself.

Yes, I will if it is really a waste of time. Each person has a certain period when she/he just wants relax instead of doing anything. The reason may be the job pressure and normally can be recovered some time later. So dont warry about it, relax yourself and take some exercise for health if possible...
