Smoking ban...What are your thoughts?

I live in Michigan and we have some senators pushing to make smoking illegal in restaurants and bars. The main reason from the health associations is the effect of second hand smoke on non smokers. I have no problem with them banning smoking in sit down restaurants, but bars I dont agree with. There are bars in the area that support non smoking and non smokers can go to those where as smokers can stay at the one's that allow it. I think it would be extremely bad for business for bars if the state passes this bill. I know that many of them are fighting it and some Michigan senate members also. With the current conditions of Michigans economy it would hurt businesses more than help them. At an establishment where people bring thier families into sure..people can wait to smoke, but when you go out to a bar where they serve alcohol and kids arent allowed then let it be. The businesses can post that it is a smoking establishment and that way non smokers know ahead of time and can decide wether they want to go or not. I know that many non smokers will diasagree with this, but why prejudice others when you have the choice wether to go into a place where smoking is allowed? Just was wondering what other people;s thought where on this matter?

i really think smoking is a dirty stinky habit. people who smoke dont realize how bad their breath smell, as well as their vehicle, and home., and clothes. Their hair stinks as well. i Hate that smell. I hate the fact that when i go somewhere out at nite, that i have to smell as bad as them. its like when you smell someone with bad bo, and have to sit next to them for a long period of time, and you cant escape it. smoke outdoors if you have to smoke i say!

i am NOT forcing anyone to give up their habits. And drinking isnt even the subject here really right? Bars also serve food, and soda too,, so if they just serve alchohol, then they probly wouldn't have quite so much business,. but anyway, you brought up a discussion, and my response was appropriate,, just as yours was. you asked for opinions, and obviously your only looking for others to back you.. that is really not a discussion. Take it to your government and let them fight for you.

Yes it is a dirty habit...your right, but here is the thing...We know! Does someone twist your arm and make you go into a place that is a smoking establishment and sit there and blow it in your face? NO...You CHOOSE to go in there. So dont be complaining about your own Personal Choices. If you read my posts above you will see that I can agree with restaraunts and family establishments because of kids. However a bar is not a family establishment. So therefore if you are an adult and dont want to be around smoke....go to a non smoking bar or club...They DO have them. And just out of curiousity do you drink? Do you know how bad that makes peoples breath smell and how sloppy they get when they are enebriated? Or how about drinking and driving...Have you ever had more than the two alotted drinks and gotten behind the wheel because YOU knew YOU were okay? Did you put me or my kids or someone else at risk? Like I said personal choice...you dont want second hand smoke dont go into that particular bar...or if you choose too, then dont complain..no one is forcing you to do anything where as you are trying to force us to give up our rights.

i live in ohio and we have the smoking ban here while i can agree with not smoking in certain places-grocerie stores, indoor places that children go- i think it is just pitiful that u cant go to the club and dance and drink and have a cigrette even more so that u cannot go outside at work and have a cig. unless u r far away from the door its cold and unless the gvmt is planning on paying our medical bills for getting sick so we can go smoke....
i do feel they should rethink this bill so many small business here are going down because of this it having a negative effect on our community

I do smoke when my kids arent around...I dont want to subject them to second hand smoke anymore than I would want to do that to anyone else's children...Kids arent in bars though and if they are the parents are losers...Thanks for the response and I hope it gets better in Ohio...chances are it will hurt us too and we are already going downhill...Thank You Jennifer Granholm!

Hi,there! I think it's good to have a ban like that.As we all know, smoking is not good at all,no matter for the one himself or the people around him. Though some places are smoking area, some places are non-smoking area and people have the choice to choose,if the store or the bar one likes is a smoking area while the one doesn't like that, then he/she might have to give it up.So if it's possible,I hope all of my friends can get rid of smoking cause it's not good for them at all.I hope all my friends and family members are health all the time:) Thanks for the discussion and have a good day^_^

Well,I never say I want others to change for me nor would I force others to do anything they don't like.I wouldn't do it and I don't want to do that. Everybody has the freedom to choose what he/she wants to do,no matter whether the thing is good or bad for him/her. I just hope all my friends could stay healthy.I usually don't eat fast food though I somehow like that sometimes.I'll try to get rid of the unhealthy food and I hope all of us could stay in a healthy environment. You can certainly do whatever you wanna do:)

Do you eat fast food? Do you dye your hair? Do you drink? Those are all bad for you as well...Dont be prejudice on one bad thing if you do a score of others. Sorry you might have to give up a bar you like....I have had to because it went to non smoking...On occassion I do go to it still...have fun..leave and go to a smoking bar. No one is making you do anything...you are asking me to change for you...you want all smokers to quit so you can still be unhealthy in other ways? I dont think so...I want all fast food industries to go out of business and I want everyone to start eating health food...LOL..Yeah thats gonna happen...Doesnt mean Im going to go around pushing my friends into the same eating habit as myself...CHOICE...PERSONAL CHOICE...Dont expect others to give up theirs because you wont like it if it happens to you.

It doesnt surprise me. Both of the states I have lived in haved Banned smoking. I am a smoker and I deal with going outside. I really want to quit because it makes my lungs hurt. I have only smoked for 13 yrs or so. Which is a long time but not as long as some.

I agree with you but its not even the bars fault when the state makes the law. The hate it to because they lose business. In WA one bar went above the law and let patrons smoke and THEY got fined big time.

here in california we've had the smoking ban in place at bars for some time. i'm pretty much used to it. until i leave the state and i'm reminded.
actually i was in las vegas recently and they now have implemented a smoking ban in restaurants. up until recently they had smoking and non-smoking sections. i don't see anything really wrong with that, but i hear also they have started creating non-smoking slot machine areas, which to me is just a sign that the non smoking ban is expanding. that would break my heart if the casinos eventually banned smoking altogether. i don't even smoke all that often, but i definitely do when in las vegas. its part of the history!
i do agree with you that the ban in bars is a little much. there is no reason people can't choose to go to a smoking bar or a non-smoking bar. also the employees can choose where to seek employment.
i hope you don't end up like us californians. doomed to always either be outside looking in at your drink or inside looking out thinking about having a smoke!

I honestly think it would be detramental to our small business economy here in Michigan if the non smoking ban goes through. Luckily we have some people in government who agree with that opinion. Im okay with the no smoking in restaurants because families do come in, but you are absolutley right that people have a choice to go where there is smoking or non. I dont think its right for smokers to singled out and non smokers to get their way. What happened to the constitution? Apparently they are willing to revise everything. A lot of the bar owners have signed petitions saying they will sue the State of Michigan for lost income if the bill passes...So for now the bill has been snuffed out...Hopefully it stays that way...I was unaware of the Vegas bans...I will remember that when we go for our trip next year..Thanks soo much for the reply and info!! :)

I agree that smoking should NOT be banned in bars. I am fine with no smoking in the workplace, and in restaraunts... fine and dandy. If nonsmokers want to go somewhere and drink where there is no smoke, then go to a place that has a bar in it where smoking isn't allowed. But for crying out loud leave our bars alone! I don't smoke as much as I used to. I don't smoke in my home because I have children, and I would never subject them to that. They have no choice about the air they breathe. That is why I am ok with banning it in restaurants and the like.. because of children, and the rights of nonsmokers too believe it or not. But there ARE nonsmoking bars. And lots of places have banned it. You know some places don't even let you smoke on their property if you go outside... even if you are sitting in your own car. Soon you won't be able to smoke on your own property because it will offend the neighbors. It's ludacris!!! Come on now... the cut off has to come somewhere. I personally can't drink without a good smokey treat here and there. It isn't physically possible for me. And when I am stressed... it is just the thing to help me unwind. They need to keep in in bars. And the economy... I know how bad it already is and I don't want to think about how bad it will be later! YIKES!!!

Well at least you know what we are talking about..So far I havent seen a non smoker post, but Im sure its coming. I want someone to tell me that they were forced to go into a smoking bar and inhale all the second hand smoke. No one can say that. If we give them restaraunts they should be happy right? I think this is going to come to if you give them an inch they take a mile! :) blahhhh

We've had a smoking ban here for a while now, and the bars and restaurants are still hopping. People are adapting, and it's a much better environment to go into.

Thanks for the reply...Michigan is in its worst economical state ever...I doubt that our small businesses such as bars would recover from the financial hardship they will endure with the business they will lose if they have to change. Hence why they signed petetions to sue the state for lost income if the bill is passed. If you dont live here then you dont know what the loss of our car industry has done to this state...Good for you that people have adapted, but its not just about deserving rights for smokers...It about people losing more jobs because people dont want to admit that they have a choice wether they go into a smoking bar or not. Like Michigan needs anymore of this...

I know in our area the ban is already in effect. I am certain about the restaurant ban, but I am not sure if they have banned smoking in bars as of yet. I agree that individuals who attend a restaurant should not have to subject themselves or their children to second hand smoke, but I think the bar scenerio is a totally different story. I think maybe bars should section off certain areas for smoking or nonsmoking, but that should be the extent of it.

Totally banning it in bars would be not so reasonable, maybe they can allow that in smoking areas of the bar, i support the banning in resturants cozz its a place to eat and of course definitely not a place of smoking and these are places where are children and its not good for their health.

Thats why I agree with stopping the smoking in restaurants. Children are present, but kids arent allowed in bars so I see no reason to not allow it there. Thanks for the reply :)

I totally agree with the restaraunt thing, but the bar no! Coming from an ex-smoker...yeah I hate smoking. The worst thing for me is to eat somewhere and to see and smell the smoke while I am eating! I hate it. it is thick and it smells, it stains and ... it smells ;-)
As for bars...that would be stupid. Even though I am an ex-smoker and I don't presently like smoking, it doesn't bother me in a bar. I mean come on drinking and smoking go hand in hand. If I am with a smoker and we are a bar i have a tendency to want one...it just goes together.
I agree that they would be bad for business.

Here in Mississippi it is already taken affect to where you can't smoke in the majority of restaurants. Some bars (not all) have designated areas outside but you can't smoke inside. I think its wrong to take smoking out of bars. I don't smoke and I work at a bar. But I still don't think its fair to take smoking out of bars. I agree that restaurants are for families and should limit the smoking cause of the kids. But most bars are 21 and over, adults who are capable of making decisions for themselves.

Im worried about my rights as a smoker, but a lot more about loss of business that Michigan cant afford right now. And thank you for agreeing with the fact that people are capable of making decisions! :)
