Fiji! Better and less expensive than Tahiti (plus there are fewer or none of those pesky French people!)
Seriously, Fiji is out of this world! The citizens are very friendly, there are lots of things to do outside the bedroom, and there are accommodations at every level and taste. A couple of the world's most exclusive resorts are in Fiji, along with nice 3 and 4 star hotels, and then there is the option to go "native" and spend very little.
It is one of my most favourite places that I have been. Now I spent two weeks in Fiji on the higher end of the backpacker's budget, and that is how I would do it again. I spent 9 nights on one of the out-islands in a small village living in a buhr (grass hut) and doing a lot of things with the native villagers. I also did a lot of snorkling on the reef, went diving a couple times, hiking in the jungle, and fishing with the village men. My other accommodation on Viti Levu the main island was at an old small resort, probably 2 stars, and it was clean comfortable and a good value for the price.
