The term domain name has multiple related meanings:
-- A name that identifies a computer or computers on the internet. These names appear as a component of a Web site's URL, e.g. mylot.com. This type of domain name is also called a hostname.
-- The product that domain name registrars provide to their customers. These names are often called registered domain names.
-- Names used for other purposes in the Domain Name System (DNS), for example the special name which follows the @ sign in an email address, or the Top-level domain names like .com, or the names used by the Session Initiation Protocol (VoIP), or DomainKeys.
-- They are sometimes colloquially (and incorrectly) referred to by marketers as "web addresses".

OK let's get this right.
A domain name is the heirarchy dot extention (name.xxx[x]) that refers to a name that corrosponds to an internet address (which is all numbers).
One of my web sites points to the internet address 208.109.93.138. The domain name (or my web site) points to that series of numbers.
But wait...
ping the right web sites and they point to the same address. This is called shared web hosting, which we will not get into.
so domain name
yahoo.com - 66.94.234.13
yahoo.com (domain name)
66.94.234.13 (internet address)
One points to the other.
As an analogy (fictitious)...
I used to live on a road called State Route 19. It was also called Johnson Street.
In internet terms
Johnson Street (domain name)
State Route 19 (internet address)
This is also used in programming as well where you have key/values but again we won't get into that.
Hope I answered your question.

thank you for your information, i think it is very particular to introduce domains. i wanna say, that domain is just a substitute for IP address. domain make us being away from IP address, make us to remember the address of website easier. domain is also a business, if without domain, the website will be single.
