Why Such a Huge National Guard Call-up?

Ohio just had the largest call-up of National Guard troops to be shipped off to Iraq since WWII. My question is this: I keep hearing that things are getting so much better over in Iraq, so why are they calling up such a huge amount of troops? These troops are slated to be gone for one year. That does not seem to me like things are slowing down in any sense of the word. What is your opinion of this situation? Has your state had a recent large call-up of troops heading for Iraq? I am really curious.

Makes you wonder. I am in Ohio and did not even hear anything. It is pretty scary. The situation just does not seem to be going anywhere. Now our soldiers have to worry about whether the Iraq soldiers are for real or not.

Hopefully, Thoroughrob, with a change of administration looming, the troops will at last be able to start coming home.

I haven't watched the news yet today. Are these new troops or are the replacing troops that will be coming home? I hope we can get out of Iraq soon. A year is a long time to be away from your family. I will keep these troops in my prayers.

The troops I am referring to, lightningMD, are from units here in my state of Ohio. I don't know about other places, but these are expected to be away for a year.

They just called up a bunch from Pa., too and I also read hear where they called the largest number since World War II from Indiana as well. The so-called "drawing-down" is just a name and numbers game, anyway; it means we'll go "down" to pre-surge numbers and they're troops that had already been slated to come home. Any idea of the "surge working" is a simple matter of too little, too late. If the Bush Administration had handled things right from the beginning the "successes" that have come due to the surge would have come a few years and an few thousand deaths ago.

Amen! to that, anniepa. They really know how to put the right "spin" on these things. It's amazing how they can take a bad situation and spin it to make it look like it's something great.
