Depends man DEPENDS. If been confronted with this question from many users. They ask 'I'm going to buy a new Pc or I have a new PC which OS shall I install" by response is "DEPENDS". It all depends on what is the intention of the user. If the user is a heavy gamer that its useless to install Unix,Linux,Ununtu,Kubunt or fedora sinec almost all games are windows compatable. On the other hand if the user is a graphical designer it will be madness to use microsoft windows and pure madness if the user uses or buys and IBM PC. So it all depends and thus befor buying and installing OS one must do his home work properly.

well so far im enjoying xp. but of course im sure there's a lot more to expect from windows. vista on the other hand is very buggy. it may have a nice interface but i think they should check it out for for bugs.

The most stable and still easy to use would be linux.
I have used XP, not home, but pro, and have problems.
so to linux now. Using OpenSUSE.. great OS..
You can run some windows software in it also...
Give Linux a try, it is much easier to use nowadays,

The best is probably one of Linux versions, but, unless you are into Linux, I would say Microsoft XP. MS really got XP right and it has become a very stable system, unlike the orignal versions of windows.
Saying that I would stay away from any "home" versions of Windows.
I once had ME as an OS, which was supposed to the home version of Windows 2000 and it was utter crap and very hard to work with.
I work chose XP over Vista at this time
