Now that most of us are experiencing this warm spell? Im not. I turned mine off today and plan on leaving it off till it gets cold again. Hey just think we can save some money! I will put some candles on tonight to warm it up. But not the cheap ones. Because when I cleaned my bathroom today I had to clean the soot from the walls. Not after all that work! So what are plans for the turning on your heat tonight?

I don't turn off my heat, I just turn it down so it won't go on unless it gets cold in the house. I had my windows open today. It felt so good to air out the house since everyone has been sick the last month of so. My cat layed by an open window all day.:)

Hello again dear TerryZ. It has been a long time since I turned on my heater in the apartment as I think that I have been getting used to the cold. Also the weather is not so cold as it was weeks back. But in the office, the heater is sometimes turned on, not always, especially when it is fine weather with sunshine shining in on us. Most of the time the heaters in the classrooms are turned on for our students to have a warm condition for study. I love it in the classrooms where I teach. Thanks for your discussion, my dear TerryZ friend.

This winter we ran our heat 2 day, yes only 2 days! Yesterday we had to put the AC on because it his 78 here. I am not sure if we are going to get another cold spell, but we have put all the cold weather gear away and have been wearing shorts again.

Yep, stinky part about it is that I just got the power bills and it was only $3 less than November and that is only because we got some kind of interest deducted from our bill, but still much less than Dec 2006.

Thermostats are wonderful things - they keep a steady temperature. When the weather warms up they shut off the heating and then turn on again when it gets cooler.
The building you live in is made from hundreds of tons of material and over a long period of time this material heats up to the temperature you choose to set your thermostat.
If you turn the heating off by hand, the mass of the building will slowly cool but you will feel warm for quite a while.
Unfortunatly, when it gets cooler and you turn the heating back on it will take some time to heat the fabric of the building up again.
If you have a greenhouse or a conservatory you will notice how quickly the temperature will change which is because there is much less mass in these types of structure.
So in temperate climates, if you want to save money on heating/cooling bills just turn the thermostat down/up ten degrees.

I did that last night and think I will go with maybe more like turning it down, that way if it gets too cold the heat will come back on. I don't know what the lows were, but I got really cold last night and I had 2 blankets on me...

I have my heat on but am keeping it low right now to keep my bill down plus it has been mild today and will be warm tomorrow as well. It is not good to turn the heat on and off during the winter as you are actually using more energy that way and could cause damage to your heating system if not careful.

I just set up my level on 45 degrees, just in case temperature drops overnight below freezing point....
So far, heat is not working and I have 66 at home, will take a while to drop below 45....
Maybe won't drop till Sunday...lol

Hi terry. I turned off my heat yesterday and it' still off. In January-- in the Northeast! How great is that? Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer so that heat's not going back on until I get a chill....

No heater for us tonight. It's been off the last two days and while I am sitting here typing away in bed, it's actually kinda warm tonight.

My fireplace is looking bleak from lack of fire past few days being it's so nice out for winter. My furnace hasn't ran in a few weeks either. If it wasn't for this huge storm that blew in, my windows would be open all night as well. I am being blessed with a beautiful light show by this storm thou.

no sense turning on the heat if it is not cool enough to warrant it. this warm spell has been a great reprieve and boost of energy for me. We do not have heat in this house other than a single kerosene heater and a little plug in electric heater - so it is generally quite cold and difficult to function! I have been cleaning yesterday and today - hope to get a lot more done after my break here. Got the fridge scoured and the stove and one countertop. Had all the dishes done, again, but they quickly replenish themselves hehe.

We don't either. We heat with Kerosene so to conserve heat we don't turn on our Kerosene heater till it gets colder then 38. In the mornings I will burn about 6-8 candles to take the chill off of the air but other then that we only use the kerosene to heat with in the cold months I am glad for the mild weather with what they say about the electric bills going to be higher this year. My sister in laws bill for one month was over $300 for the month of January. I have home interior candles that we bought from a fundraiser the kids were doing for the school. They also help make the house smell nice, like straberries..I have seen from the news weather that we will be having another cold spell coming my way this weekend snow..brrr..Well, have a nice day. and keep warm cuddled under those blankies and throws.

It's been cool here lately so I've had to keep the heat turned on so my son doesn't get too cold. Also, I keep kids in my home so I don't want them getting too cold either. It was actually 70 degrees yesterday though and it's supposed to be 70 again today but then it's going to start getting cold again and it's supposed to start raining. So I will probably just keep mine on but turn it down until it's gets cold again.

I never use my heat at any point of the year in the house. I wear long underwear and lots of layers throughout the winter time. I live in W. Oregon and it gets down to around 25-40 degrees at night in W. Oregon. The Pacific Ocean keeps the temperatures slightly warmer closer to the coast than inland. I also do not like to wake up in a hot room and have a down blanket that keeps me warm on cold nights. I feel like I breath better waking up in a cool/cold temperature with fresh air.
