Do you air dry your plates or towel dry them?

Was doing the dishes recently, and realise that there are two main methods. Some people air dry their plates. Others towel dry them. I used to do the latter. But after having my own place, I have adopted the hubby's method of towel drying them. I guess there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I have a drying rack, and also a tea towel. So sometimes I still put some dishes on the drying rack to just air dry. What is your preferred method?

LOL - 4 kids and millions of dishes, I air dry. By the time I'm done washing I just don't have the time or energy to dry also. Of course over the years kids have shared in the task such as when the 2 older boys were younger and home one washed and the other dried then the next week they switched. As they got older and had jobs, school activities, and 'girl friends' dishes fell back onto Mom. Praise the Lord though where I live now there is a dishwasher and I use it but old habits if there are too many or larger pans to fit I will wash and let air dry.

It works pretty good now - enough clean dishes that I can run a load of dirty ones once a day then next day I take care of the clean and start loading again. Of course when grandkids are here we go through a lot more dishes but still seem to manage one load a day. I do still handwash and air dry the larger pans.

I always air dry. My tea towels are used to clean the surface, not plates or glass. I don't like drying with tea towels since they leave mark on the plates

so your tea towels are actually table cloths. :)

I do both and use the dishwasher to dry our dishes. It all depends on how many dishes that need washing and drying. If i am in the mood, then i'll wash and towel dry them. If I am not, then I'll either use the dishwasher if I have a full load and or wash and air dry them :)

I usually let them set on the rack for drying, and the kids know to grab their plate from there before going to the cabinet for one. If I had a lot of dishes to do I will do up a rack full, towel dry and then start washing again. when we had a dishwasher I usually towel dried the dishes and put them away when the cycle was done, otherwise we do not remember clean or dirty. lol.

It would be the second. I towel dry them. If I just leave them there, they would sort of dry too but they look kinda messy. And if you have more than 1 "layer" of plates, it is hard to dry them properly.

unless you stand them upright in a drying rack.

Most of the time I will wash the dishes by hand instead of using dishwasher. Naturally, I will leave them air dry as I don't need them right after the meal. It is no point to towel dry after the washing as it is extra work for me. LOL

Hi squaretile, the weather in my country is rather hot all year round, so it is nice to have the washed dishes air dry on the drying rack. My way is to rinse the washed plates with clean filter water. The plates are then placed vertically instead of lying flat on the drying rack. In this way most of the remaining water will be drained away faster and leave little impurities.

Towel dry? Are you kidding me ? LOL I don't have enough time in the day to towel dry my dishes..lol. I have a dish drainer rack and a double sink. I wash on one side and let the dishes air dry on the other side.

Dishes dry rack - A double dish dry rack
Air is better and cleaner if you got a rack a space in the kitchen. Towel is not recommended as it can carry germs to clean plates, tissues are the option if you can't change towel every session. I don't have much space now so tissues for me thou prefer air dry.

that's true - tissues are a more expensive option though.

I ususally let my dishes air dry in the dish rack. Sometimes I will towel dry just the bottoms and outsides of the dishes just so I can put them away quicker, but not the area where the food goes, because dish clothes can put bacteria back on your dishes.

that's interesting. so less water drips to the dish rack with your method.

I mostly use a dishwasher to wash dishes and they get dried in there. IF I hand wash the dishes they air dry unless there is one that I need to use right away. Then I will towel dry the one I need.
