About To Go Crazy!

As I stated in a discussion of mine previously, I use to love when it would storm, but since moving to Kentucky with the threat of nearly every severe storm producing a tornado, when it storms now I just about have an anxiety attack.
I know what to do in the event of getting a warning, but still the thought of a tornado passing by even with me, my family and pets in the storm shelter just scares the life out of me.
Today due to the wacky weather we are having here in Kentucky it is expected to storm severely, and there has already been talk of the very storms that are headed my way producing tornadoes. The wind here has already picked up to a level that it is starting to rattle the windows, and I'm starting to become very fidgety, and all around nervous.
What are some of the things you do, to cope with a situation that causes nervousness or anxiety?
Thanks in advance for your responses! Prayers are welcome to. Keeping fingers crossed the storms don't get to bad here.

Sending prayers for the safety of you, your family and pets as I post this. I just logged on and noticed you posted this a day ago. Please come back as soon as possible and let us know how you all are. Prayerfully everything is alright there.
Where we live in the middle of Southwestern Manitoba tornadoes and hurricanes to occur but not on a regular basis they way they do in your area. What I do to cope with nervousness is breathe...deep inhales and exhales while quietly affirming...everything is always working for my highest good beyond the appearance of these circumstances. I keep doing this because deep breathing wish slow, steady inhales and exhales does calm the body by bringing more oxygen throughout the system. When we are in stressful situations we naturally tense up and the fright and flight response pumps a lot of adrenalin and cortisol through the system. Breathing in rhythmic, steadying ways helps to counter-balance that.
So my friend...my thoughts, prayers and energetic support for you and all your loved ones are being sent your way.
Hope to hear back from you soon with news that all is well.

Thanks Raia for your response and prayers! :) Everything turned out ok, though was a very scary day and night for me. Thankfully no tornado touched down, but did have near hurricane force winds come through my area, which knocked down loads of tree branches and one large tree across my drive way. Only some siding was taken off the house, but that was easily repairable.
Most times when severe storms hit my family is here with me, but on Tuesday, my husband was at work and the kids were in school. So when they are here I am always to busy making sure they are ok and stay calm, that my panic attacks during such weather don't pop up, but when I'm alone, for some reason it's really hard for me to stay calm. I really don't like it.
I will keep your suggestions in mind though, for the next time I am alone and severe weather passes through.
Thanks again for your prayers and response! :)

Took me awhile to get back here...but I am glad to know you and your family came through this safely. I plan to check for an update on your friend's accident as well. How is she, her family and the rest of your community doing now?
Glad my suggestions might be of help. However, I know when fear kicks it is easier to talk about...rather than actually do the connection to breath. It does work for me through.
Hope you don't have as many storms this year...although with the crazy weather patterns everywhere I guess there is no way of predicting.
Take care,
Raia

Hello Gabs, Thanks for your concern, prayers and response. It sucks to be scared, I've never been one that gets scared easily, but send severe weather my way these days, and I just turn into a whole different person, one that I'm not very use to being.
I'm generally a strong person, when my family is here, but when they are away, I fall to pieces just about when things like this occur. It's odd to say the least.
I'm doing ok though. Thanks again! :)

With weather agaries, we have no control over them, if you cannot leave Kenyucky and go to a less storm prone area, just go to bed, lie down with face over your pillow and a cover over you, say a little truthful pray and leave the rest to God!

Thanks for your response! :) I wish I could lay back down and just hide under the covers, but unfortunately I have work things to try and get accomplished also.
I know I can't control the weather, in some cases wish I could, but it doesn't stop me from being so dang fearful of storms these days. We are working towards moving to a less tornado prone area, but like most things, it takes money, and until such time, I'm trying to cope as best as I can without having a total break down. Most times I try not to think about it, but having the windows constantly rattling makes it hard to keep my mind on other things. I know I'll get by ok, and most likely over reacting to something that may not happen, but the human mind can be terrible at times.
Thanks again for your response. :)

I have anxiety attacks, and one trigger for me are severe storms. I live in Ohio now (again) but when I lived in Texas for a short while, it was the way you describe Kentucky. EVERY time it stormed, the tornado sirens went off. The best thing that I can suggest is to keep yourself busy. Read a book, do a craft, clean. I steer clear of dishes, I do everything but what I have to stick my hands in water for and then when the storm passes, thats all I have left to do. It's scary, and it's hard when you're having a panic attack, but keeping myself busy is the best I can do for myself.

Thanks for your response ky1119! :) It's weird for me to be so panicky during storms now, when I use to love them so much, but I guess that's just how the human mind works at times. I'll keep in mind the things you have suggested for the next bout of severe weather that may pass through.

I understand your nervousness since I live in Missouri and we get tornadoes here as well. The best advice I can give you is to be prepared, take every precaution and pray...they say God takes care of his own. Although this post is 4 months old and I'm sure the threat is pass...perhaps this will help you the next time around.

Hi there jeweledbluerose...oh, yes, I've been hearing about all the insane type weather that's been going on actually all over the country. My one friend who moved to Northern CA a few years ago, always boasted how it never snowed there..well, guess what, they been having snow. And yes, I've been hearing about the horrible weather problems in the mid-west as they too are having a lot of rain, and storms that can trigger tornadoes, but yikes I never knew Kentucky was vulnerable to tornadoes...some months ago, we too here experienced really wacky weather...I remember it was so windy, and I was watching the trees that are in front of my apt.building and was actually saying prayers that they wouldn't be knocked down by the wind..I NEVER saw wind that strong before in my life here...then listening to the news later on, they said a tornado did touch down...we're talking about BROOKLYN, NY (I'm in Queens area). Now this might sound really bizarre...but some years ago, I had frequent dreams of a tornado hitting my area..uh, maybe I was influenced by that movie Twister..LOL..but the dreams were so vivid...it hasn't happened yet directly in my area..but one never knows. My prayers go to you that the weather calms down...and you too! (((hugs)))

Thanks pye for your response and prayers! :) Thankfully no tornado touched down in my area, but did have to spend the day yesterday cleaning up tree branches from my yard and cutting up a large tree that fell across my drive way.
As I was listening to the local news yesterday, Tuesday's storm brought with it near hurricane force winds through my area, those to me are nearly as bad as having a tornado come through, since they can be just as damaging. I'm still thanking the higher powers that be, that no real damage was done to the house, only had to repair a few areas were the siding came off.
Hearing of the tornado coming through Brooklyn, NY reminds of the time that one touched down in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was still living in Nevada at the time, and remembered freaking out than that one would possibly touch down in the area I lived at the time. They certainly are a scary thing to think of, and hope and pray I'll never experience one first hand.
