I LOVE chihuahua's and want one soooo much!! However, I heard they are hard to train and are stubborn. I'm currently in college so i'm scared if they are as hard to train as everyone says they are, I'm going to be in for a shock!!! Please let me know if your dog was hard to train, any tips for getting a chihuahua :)

I have a friend who always has chihuahua's, but she always has two at a time as she found that they can be very possessive to the point that when she would go out they would frett so much one that when she left it alone her little dog would physically get sick so i would suggest right from the start maybe leave it alone at times and get it used to be on its own..

I agree. Generally, I have found that your pets are what you make them. Also, if you want them to be comfortable around other people, make sure you socialize them - have friends and family over so they become used to people. For the training part, I have found that kennel training works best. As soon as I get home, we go out for a "potty break" and it seems to work. I have 5 chihuahua's (3 are mine and 2 are my daughter's). They all get along great. But, when I only had one, it was fine, too. They are all different and have such different personalities - I don't know what I would do without them!

Yes they can be hardheaded, and difficult to train. They are very smart though. That could be why they are hard to train. Since you are in college, I would recommend holding off until you finish up with college. Just my opinion, but with going to college, you probably have enough on your plate without trying to housetrain a dog. Just my thoughts. If you're absolutely jonesing for canine companionship, try volunteering at a local animal shelter a couple times a week. Those animals could use a loving caring hand.

My Sister in law has one and that is the only dog on the planet that I hate. Not only does it not go outside when it doesnt want to but all it does is bark. It has this hi pitched squeeky yappy bark that it does all the time. That dog annoys the crap out of me.

Chihuahua's are the cutest dogs, but, watch out! They're very high maintenance. My neighbor's got one and the poor pup barks all day long while my neighbor's at work. An ex-girlfriend of mine couldn't leave her chihuahua home alone. It got to the point where she had to buy a carry on bag and bring it all over with her (ala Paris Hilton). Even when we went to bed, the chihuahua had to sleep betwen us under the sheets! Very cute but high maintenance. Good luck hope you can give it all the attention it requires.

I have three chihuahuas, and I love them. Two of them are less than a year old. I would recommend them. They can be a little stubborn, but a rolled up newspaper helps with that. All we had to do is tap them with it a few times when we were disciplining them at first. Now all we have to do it point it at them and tap it on our hand while speaking in a stern tone to them. They are extremely smart and energetic. They are also very protective. They let us know when they here something outside, and they sit on the couch and look out our living room windows for anything coming into the yard. They bark like crazy when they see something they know isn't supposed to be there.
The only real problem we have had with them is that they don't like being around little kids. The haven't grown up around little kids though. I am sure that if you got the puppy, and it was around little kids from the start, though, that there wouldn't be a problem. You can bet that is this were the case, they would do anything they could to protect that kid if necessary. They are loving dogs. One of mine is actually laying across my shoulders behind my neck like a little pillow right now as I write this. As with any dog, how you treat them will determine their personality traits. If you are mean to them and yell at them, they will turn out the same way...they will be mean. However, if you love on them and rub them and treat them good, they will make loving and loyal pets. Ours get kisses and belly-rubs daily. They are spoiled rotten. LOL They live better than a lot of humans, and I thank God every day that I can spoil them and take good care of them. They certainly deserve it, and I don't want to imagine life without them.
So, YES...I highly recommend chihuahuas. It may be better to get a younger one and starting there, though, so that you can kind-of train it to your lifestyle rather than asking a fully mature dog to adjust itself to you. Good luck and be sure to post pictures if you get one.
