I am a self taught web designer and I have made a few websites over the years just using html. I am thinking about taking the time to teach myself the asp coding but I know little about it. What kinds of things can asp do which html cannot? If you are someone who taught it to yourself, was it difficult to learn? and do you prefer to use it over html?

Html is a browser base code, when you look at internet explorer what is displayed is Html. If you are trying to creat a website that has a user login or a site that requires databasing, I would go with asp, aps.net, or PHP which is free. Now there are a few this you need to understand about asp there are different languages you can use for example:
1. Visual Basic(VB)
2. C#(C Share)
You would need to go to the store and pick up a book on one of these languages. I would suggest learning VB first once you get comfortable with the language you will understand why ASP, ASP.NET are a web developers best friend.
I hope this helps you with a basic understanding of ASP vs. Html without getting you confused.

Asp is easy and very powerful when connecting data into database whether is it Oracle or Access.I do use access database for my asp intranet page. The were lots of tutorials in the internet regarding how asp.Asp can use Visual basic or c+, it is depend on your preference, I do use visual basic all the time and few of java script when doing asp based website.
