With my first I was in labor for seven or eight hours, but I had to have pitocin, because I stopped dialating at 8cm. Yes it was painful and towards the end I wanted an epidural but it was too late. :) Anyways with my second I was in hard labor for 22 hours. And it was HELL! I did end up having an epidural out of shear exhaustion, I needed rest before the pushing came. I had to have pitocin with that one too. So for me labor was very painful but the pitocin had a lot to do with it. I wasn't in too much pain until they decided to give me that to try and help. jerks. lol :)

My water bag broke at 1.30 pm, not long after that I suffer terrible back pain every 5 minutes, nobody at home and I fall down as I have wet the floor . I managed to get my husband after a few calls. He rush home like a F1 driver. We reached the hospital around 2.30 pm. I was in the delivery room around 3 pm (too painful to look at the time). The nurse there give me normal painkiller and morfin gas to inhale. It works well, I'm able to push and my baby was born at 6.21 pm. Don't worry too much about the pain, just think of the cute little baby that you are going to get very soon. Pray hard to GOD for their blessing, ok?

Every case and every woman is different.
I am sure this will not happen to you and I am not telling this to scare you. My first labour was really unusual, and many doctors and nurses since my children were born (16 and 17 years ago) have told me that NO ob/gyn worth their salt would let that happen as it did to me.
I was in labour for three and a half days with my first child and after the first three days I was only 1.5 cm open. I did really well with the pain, but I generally had a pretty high pain tolerance until my back disease started three years ago. After the third morning they gave me pitocin to make me dialate. After they gave me that, I started to dialate faster and I asked for the epidural. It made it really relaxing in fact for me to give birth because I was so wound up for being awake pretty much for three days. When the baby was finally born they found out the reason I think it took so long, the cord was apparently wrapped around his foot, making it difficult for him to descend as necessary.
After having the pictocin and the epidural I had a very easy delivery and normal birth.
With my second child, my labor was way more normal. Only twelve hours. I had the epidural when I was a 6 cm, about 8 hours into the whole thing. It was a really easy birth compared to the first one.
Don't worry. Everything will be wonderful. I pray for a healthy baby and a loving family. I know you will have that. Amen.

Thanks for best response. LOL. I told this story on a phone in radio talk show once and the host said YOU WIN! Unfortunately there wasn't any prize, she was just commenting on my situation. That is what everyone says...What was the doctor thinking? Oh well, I have two healthy smart young men so I guess no harm was done.

With my first son I was in labor for about 5-6 hours. My water broke around 3:30, maybe 4:00 in the morning and I gave birth to him right after 9:30 am. However I was dilated 2-3 centimeters two weeks before he was born.
With my second son, my contractions started around 4 in the morning, though my water didn't break. The contractions were light so my husband and I decided to wait until they got stronger before going to the hospital. By 6 am they were pretty strong, so we left (water still didn't break). After I was admitted into triage I found out I was dilated 9 centimeters...and my water still didn't break. The doctor finally had to break it and my son came out 4 minutes later. Darn doctor and nurses didn't want me to push yet as THEY weren't ready, but my son was so out he came! LOL This was also a little after 9:30 in the morning.
I didn't have an epidural either time, though I did have an episiotomy with my first son. Other than that it was a natural birth.
As far as the pain goes, it wasn't bad, at least for me. Though it will vary from woman to woman. Try not to think too much about the pain, but rather think about your precious baby arriving into the world soon.
Good luck!

My water broke at about 4 in the morning and i gave birth to my baby daughter at 1:29 in the afternoon...so i had labor for more than 9 hours... not counting the brackston hicks labor for a week...
Well at around 11:30 am... i was in so much pain that the doctor or anesthesian applied epidural... which was quite a relief...and i think if i will go through it again... i would certainly wan to have that God given gift of epidural to be administered to me again...

My first labor was 12 hours, My second labor was 6 hours. The last four labors were about 3 to 4 hours each. I never got an epidural because I am afraid of needles.

With my son I was only in labor for about 8 hours. I got the epidural and after that I didn't feel a thing. The doctore kept telling me when I was having a contraction and I couldn't tell her cause I wasn't feeling anything. I am pregnant again and trust me I am getting the epidural ! I loved it and there is no way I could handle the pain if I didn't get it. LOL
