It is a good thing you're posting this information. As a PC Technician, I come across so many customer issues that call me about this problem - of course the great guide to have them do disk cleanup, or disable unwanted startup files, or virus/spyware scan or hard drive diagnostic scans. Another good thing to is to check how much memory/RAM a person has which might be an issue as well - always good to upgrade it for more breathing room for their applications.

Best advice gemini57 as this is done for my computer every four hours or so since I work my business leads, designing, posting, publishing, writing, emailing and videographing all day long my computer has a ton of 'temporary file folders' that require emptying. Your suggestion is good as long as people remember their computer will run as well they program it to run. If a pop-up blocker is not enabled, those wear down the system; if unnecessary items are in your start-up menu instead of the basic operating system commands (you can customize your preferences on Advanced properties icons later--but for start-up stay basic) you can slow down your loading resources; if your cookies attached to sites you visit are not dumped (deleted passwords, temporary files, formats, and graphics embeds) than your system is slower and of course finally which most people miss: vacuum your terminals, vents, top and sides of your tower, make sure there is no dust, webs, or other stuff like books, papers or walls too close to your machine. It needs proper ventilation to not over-run the fan and burn out your operating system. If all else fails and the system is still slower than molasses, shut down, take an aspirin and call your tech in the morning ! sharing the light and happy new year, Miss Erica Hidvegi, the Enlightenment_Advisor, B.A. Psych/M.A. Transpersonal Studies- Cnslng/Author, Artist, Photographer, Entrepreneur & Freelance extraordinaire http://enlightenedpsych2.blogspot.com/

Good idea. Also remove any unneccessary programs from start up. For example you don't need MSN, download programs etc all switching on when you switch on your computer. You can open them manually when you need them

I have to admit that, despite my DSL speed, my computer is running annoyingly slow. I know I have too much software downloaded in it and my computer's memory is limited.

there are a couple of different ways to get your computer running faster. you could defragment it, scan disk check, empty your rycycle bin along with your temporary internet files and your internet cookies...doing all of this on a regualr basis should keep your computer running nicely although you will need to remember all your login id's and passwords cuz they go along with the temporary internet files

Well yes my system used to keep getting slower but then i found out about crap cleaner. Its an amazing software and completely free and just this software alone helps in keeping my pc clean.Apart from disk cleanup u should also use disk fragmenter from time to time
