When should I start my baby on solids?

I have been hearing so many things about when to start a baby on solid foods and I have also heard that the exact timing of starting solid foods depends on the baby's growth and development. I am so unsure about when to start. Are there any signs from the baby to tell if he is ready for solids?
I took my baby to the doctor yesterday and she didn't say anything about starting him on solids yet. She just asked about his milk. I didn't even think to ask because I wasn't concerned about this because I thought it was way too early until someone asked me if I started him on solids yet. He is only a little over two months old. He can't even sit without support yet but he is holding his head up real good. Someone was telling me you can start a baby as early as 6 weeks old on solids?!
When did you start your baby on solids? I don't have to take him back to the doctor until he is 4 months old but should I start feeding him solids before then?

You didn't mention if you were bottle feeding or bre@st feeding your baby. Usually I think it isn't until 6 months that a bottle fed baby needs solid food. If you are completely bre@stfeeding though, you can wait until a year..

Really? My kids did just fine with it and generations from the beginning of time also did fine with it... I think it's the baby food companies that want you to start earlier.

My daughter-in-law is starting my granddaughter on pablum and apple sauce and mu granddaughter is six months old. The usual time is when the baby can sit up and can grasp things, because that means she can handle a spoon (or at least play with it.) and try to feed herself. This is when they are starting to get their teeth. Four months is way too young. That person who talked to you probsbly had a baby who had early teeth and may have been afraid of the baby biting her while nursing.
Usually mothers want the baby to take solids early for that reason, rather than rhe readiness of the baby.

Unfortunately, you need to feed you baby BEFORE they are capable of feeding themselves :) My daughter couldn't sit on her own until after 6 months so that means she would've gone without food if this was how it was supposed to work :)
sorry

my daughter started on solids when she's around 6month old, that she can sit, starting her teeth..4months is too young for that kind of food, your baby needs to have only milk, cerelacs, when you go to the department stores you can see labels what ages need to start that kind of food..

This one is kinda hard coz all kids vary but they recommend not starting before 4 months - although you can prepare them for solid foods before hand by adding a cereal type power to their bottle - which will thicken the milk slightly & fill their belly better.
I guess it all depends on how old bub is, also, how much he is eating - if you find he is feeding more or is perhaps waking more often for a feed, try adding in some baby cereal to the bottles he will fill him up better :)
Ask your Dr if you have any concerns but if you think he's feeding more or wanting more, more frequently, then try the baby porridge or cereal - i had my daughter started around 3 months or just before! She's now 19 months & healthy as they come!
Good Luck!

At 1 month, I would put mashed potatoes and ice cream and other things like that on my finger and put it in my kids mouth, they loved it. It gives them a different taste rathar than that nasty milk they always have, ya know. If you aske the doctor they will tell you do not give a baby anything until they reach 12 months. I think that is rediculous as long as you watch the baby with what they have in their mouth. As soon as mine got old enough to grab things with their hands and got a few teeth, I gave them a hot dog winnie. Or give them some pizza crust to knaw on, it is just bread, it gets soggy, but it feels good on their gums. If you do not feels comfortable giving him solids then don't. I guess it just really depends on the mother. My second child had to start getting baby food out of the jars at 2 months, she wanted to eat so much, and she would never get full. I had to use one of those feeder bottles with her. But I would get a bowl and mix a jar of baby food and then put some rice cereal in the bowl too. Then I would put it in the feeder bottle so that it gave her more. So did not get extra fat like people say they do. Also, if your baby acts like they are always hungry, add some rice cereal to their bottle of milk, then cut the nipple with a knife just a tiny bit. This will also make then sleep through the night without waking up so much. Hope that some of this has helped you.

Four to six months is usually the time to start a baby on solids. Some kids who drink too much formula or are hungry will start on the rice (or whatever you choose) cereals a bit soon. Normally the pureed veggies are not started until 4 months because that is the time when a baby's digestive track can handle other food types, and a baby has started the more chewing and swallowing motions with their mouth.

That's really difficult to answer. I would suggest you call the doctor's office and maybe talk to one of the nurses if the doctor is not available.
I raised my kids so long ago and they all had collic so their needs were a little different. I did, however, put some flaky cereal in their formula when they were maybe 3-4 months old and opened the nipple up a little bit. Not so sure that was a good idea as they probably swallowed more air by this kind of feeding. My kids didn't seem satisfied with formula alone so this is the reason I did it. They are grown now and healthy.

I wouldnt worrie about solids until at least 6 months of age. The doctor probally didnt mention or ask about solids to you because I dont believe that they recomend giving solids any earlier. Babys formula contains everything a child needs to grow for the first few months. I would say when your child can sit in his Highchair supported by himself then start off with Pablum. Just keep that going for awhile just so his body has time to be introduced to it and digest it properly. Then gradually introduce other things. By that time you will have made a vist for his 4 month appointment and you can ask what the doc suggests. If you notice before then that the formula is not keeping him full and he is requiring another bottle sooner than needed then just make a quick phone call or appointment and ask what the doc suggests. Doc may suggest just a few tbs of pablum or something before or after his bottle, you never know. But with all being said, the babies formula contains absolutley everything your darling son needs to keep him healthy :-)

I started my son on solid foods when he was 3 months old, but the adviced age is 4-6 months old.
You will know when he is ready for solid foods.
Your baby will start to still be hungry after his milk and this will usually be anytime after 3 months old, but oviously you will have to start with completely pureified food or ready made baby food from jars. Jars from 4 months old are normally ok for babies anytime after 3 months old.
I had to change my sons milk to one for hungry babies at 1 month old, because he wasn't satisfied on the artificial milk he had from birth. When he got to 3 months old i had to give him milk aswell as solid food because he became ready for it.
As everyone says it depends on the babies own development as not one baby is the same.

My doctor said to start rice cereal at 4 months and then move to ither foods when that was easy going. One new food per week so that food alergies are easity recognised. It is an exciting time. I felt like the kids were eating half as often when we began solids and that gave me a lot more time.

Our doctor told us that we can start our baby on solid when he is 6 months old but we only started him on solid when he was about 7 months old and so far he has been doing well and he already have chosen what he likes and what he does not like. Based on what the doctor said, as long as they are 6 month sor more, it should be okay but it is best to get the opinion from your doctor again before you start your baby on solid.

I started my daughter out on rice cereal at 3 1/2 months. I didn't start giving her veggies and fruits until she was 4 months old. I as told that it is more important what the baby can do as opposed to how old they are. If they can sit up with a little support and not topple over then it should be ok, but I think your son is just a little too young just yet.

Generally it is recommended to wait until 4-6 months to start solids. Signs that he is ready are he can hold his head up, he doesn't seem satisfied after a bottle, and he is often hungry for another bottle sooner than usual. Babies go through growth spurts often, so don't assume he is ready for solids if he is hungrier than usual for a day or two.
The reason to wait is because allergies are more likely to develop if solids are started too early. If either you or your husband have a family history of allergies, definitely wait to talk with your pediatrician before starting solids.
Also, around 4-6 months is when the tongue thrust reflex starts to disappear. This reflex makes him push things out of his mouth, which makes it hard to swallow solid food.
If you do decide to start, begin with rice cereal, and mix it with formula to make it kind of soupy. He will probably not actually swallow much at first. Just give him a few spoonfuls once a day at first, to get him used to the new taste and texture.

Most people start their babies on solids around 6 months. When you went to the Doctor's did you ask her about when you should start your child on solid foods? I wouldn't start a baby on solid foods at 6 weeks. When you start them that early they can develop an allergy to whatever type of food you feed them. It's best to talk to a pediatrician and express your concerns.
I hope that helped you.
Good luck with your little one.
