the Chinese lunar year day is every year dissimilar, is calculates depending on the date, lunar calendar December last day, the people become "the lunar New Year's Eve" vulgarly, this day of everybody puts on the holiday the splendid attire to gather in the same place stays up all night on new year's eve, when 12 spot dings sound, the new year started.

I saw on a calendar that this Chinese new year was the year of the rat. Is that true? If so, why?

Yes,was the mouse year, China since birth saying of the Xiao,they were the mouse,the cow,the tiger,the rabbit,the dragon,the snake,the horse,the sheep,the period of five days,the chicken,the dog,the pig.They represent the different year,a 12year samsara,last year is 2007 pig years,this year is 2008 mouse years, was in this year birth's children the mouse, the Chinese has own animal representation.
