Sleeping before a Holiday?

January 12, 2008 4:34am CST
I'm flying to Rome on Monday at 7am, which means leaving at about 4.30, we are trying to figure out the best way to get enough sleep before, we are either going to stay up as long as we can tonight and only sleep for a few hours and then pass out from exhaustion at about 7 or 8 Sunday, or sleep regularly tonight an take some herbal sleeping tablets at about 6 tomorrow night, we just don't want a repeat of our summer trip to Turkey when staying up all night before going to the airport shattered us out for our first few days. Any ideas? How do you manage your sleep before flying early?

When I was going to catch a 2am bus in Australia I went to bed from 7pm to 1am. Then I was not too tired when I arrived in Sydney. Flight times in the Pacific islands are terrible. I went to bed in the day for a nap as long as I could before getting up for 2am and 3am flights. When I fly out of an airport at 6am I have to spend the night in a sleeping bag on the floor of the airport. This is not a comfortable thing to do. Try a warm bath, gentle music and then read something boring before you drift off to sleep. Good luck and have a fantastic time in Rome.

Correct me if I am wrong: you are going from the UK to Italy in a 7AM flight which means waking up at 4AM. There is no jetlag from UK to Rome, it's just one hour ahead and the flight should take 2 1/2 hours or so, enough for a little refreshing nap after flight service. Just go to sleep at normal time and make sure your alarm clock it set properly and works for you. Don't stay up all night this has repercussions in the following days - increase of tiredness and irritation, sleepless and lack of concentration. I am used to 10-11 hours flight and the best thing to do is keep live normal and sleep on the plane just after the meal and waking up just before breakfast. Have a nice trip and nice holidays.
