Boss fires staff for not smoking

I am shocked to read about this German company where the boss fired 3 staffs just because they requested a free smoke environment.
"I can't be bothered with trouble-makers," Thomas was quoted saying. "We're on the phone all the time and it's just easier to work while smoking. Everyone picks on smokers these days. It's time for revenge. I'm only going to hire smokers from now on."
Looks like he did that as a revenge to non-smokers. I am sure members who are smokers here would agree with him and those who are not would not like him, just like I do...

I am shocked too! The laws in Germany really consent people to get fired for these silly reasons? At least here we have a law that you can't fire someone without a right cause. And a right cause for firing this boss would be his stupidity and revengeful attitude

That's just straight out wrong.
Smoking is a huge health concern and the guy kicks out three staff members just because they want a healthier life? What the hell? Luckily, smoking isn't allowed in workplaces or public places in my country.

How could he relate work and smoking.. hm... I think it's ridiculous.. esp. since smoking is not good for h ealth

My theory here may sound a little different. In his story he probably felt that after all the closing down everything available to smokers, and making them stand outside in the cold in the winter, and they cant even smoke in adult populated bars because non smokers dont want them around then it is high time that the non smokers felt that way. However I dont think he should have fired them, he should have put a little shed outside with a steel bench that hurts your bum everytime you sit on it and let them have their smoke free zone.
