I was wondering. I have started a few posts and recieved no credit for the responces to them but when I respond to a post I get points. I thought your points went up when people responded to your posts as well. Am I wrong?

You get points when you respond to discussions. You get paid for participaion, whether is responding or starting discussions. BTW Welcome to Mylot, I hope you enjoy it here, its a great place to make friends, and just hang out.

My understanding is that you only get the points for those discussions that you respond to. I'm not sure how you get points for what you start.

Well, after being here and active for a while, I notice that you get points for both. As long as you post, and you stay active, you will earn. SO do not fret too much about it. Just enjoy yourself here posting to the various topics. Once you get the momentum going, you will start to see the returns. Especially so when you get your first payout. You will become even more motivated after that!
