Over the years there has been a climbing rise inchildren being diagnosed and medicated for ADD/ ADHD and ODD and various others..
Do you feel that these children are being over medicated?
What do you feel about the rising climb of these diagnoses are they valid or not?
Should these kids be medicated or not?

I think you know what I'm going to answer to this one! LOL
I have had trouble with my daughter going on 9 years now and we still don't have an official diagnosis on paper which is completely frustrating me because she is not receiving the proper treatment to help her deal with her issues.
I'm still fighting and will continue to fight until I get her some help. The psych did want me to try meds before testing her on everything because it was faster and I refused. I wasn't about to medicate just to see what happens! Sometimes I wonder if I should have anyways to see if there would have been some results but then another part of me thinks it's ridiculous!
I can imagine that some parents are so very desperate, they'll agree with the meds right off the bat. it's not a negative remarks, I'm in the same shoes - desperate... but I just couldn't do it.
I'm not sure there is much of an increase in official diagnosis. I know too many parents that claim their child is ADD or ADHD however has never seen a dr about it! I think it's more people making the assumption versus an actual diagnosis.
We also have to consider there is an increase in all other medical diagnosis such as allergies and asthma because of our environment is ever so changing which I will agree this would cause the same effect for disabilities such those mentioned above.

I agree with you, like you I have went through alot and had to fight to get help for my son. I tried everything before he went on to meds and I agree that meds are always the best thing my daughter is completely doing great and fine with a only a TSS to help but my son ended up being a danger to others and himself and that was with the meds and then he got hospitalized and they actually stripped him of his med and observed him and then put him on a low dose of blood pressure meds and bingo it help. I'm not saying that this completely changed him and that he is now perfectly fine and doesn't have episodes but now they are fewer than they were .. I might have an episode here and there but guess what that it so much better than having three a day to the point where I'm called to the school and he's in the conference room hiding under the desk kicking everyone. I feel you pain I know your frustration and i know how skeptical I was when it came to medications I was so afraid of the side effects and what kind of damage they could do, but I also knew at one point it was he was either going to be hospitalized or removed from the home if he keeped everything up because where I live my BSC and TSS have to report to CYS and if I know I have a child that is a danger to other and a danger to himself and I don't try everything to get him help then he can be removed so the other kids are safe or they will removed the other kids to keep them safe. I'm happy to say the worst that has happened was to have him commited for a week that I went and spent everyday with him and I did everything I could do for him. So if it does come down to it don't feel bad and I want you to know I didn't jump either at the meds I tried other alternatives first medication was a last resort and last ditch effort. Agian I wish you luck and hope things go good when the mobile therapist comes into the house. Have a nice day .

I think everyone is getting diagnosed improperly because the doctors seem to say people have something just on what people tell them, and in some cases this makes them diagnose something completely different from what a person really has wrong with them.
Children are usually diagosed wrong more often, because they cannot explain what the symptoms are as easily as adults. If the child is too young to tell them, the doctors have to rely on the parent to tell them and that can sometimes be slightly different from what really is wrong, because anyone can get things mixed up or slightly different from how it really is.

this is very true Thank you for your insightful response .. you are correct that many times it could be the lack of communication from the kids that can't communicate exactly what is wrong and from things being lost in translation from the parents to the doctors.

I think of it in a way as labeling. We have preps and goths etc. But I think doctors are labeling children with all these different things.
I had an experience where my friend was being abused and she was telling me about it. I got stressed out about it, who wouldn't? Then I went to the doctor and told them I'm been upset, my friend needs help. I told them and then they got me "ME" a special doctor because they said I'm Bi-Polar.
I was like "Okay" sure I'll go see a doctor and they tried to get me on medication and sleeping pills *I was even sleeping really well and they got me "sleeping pills?"
Well the good news was I didn't take any of the pills and my friend got her situation figured out and I felt much better once things we're figured out with my friend. I went on and lived my life.
But I still wonder why they thought I was Bi-polar and why they wanted me on so many different pills? Is this what I get for helping my friend, A side order of pills?
Next time a doctor says to you that your child has ADD/ADHD, ODD, OCD and their bi-polar research your child and find out if this is true or not. In my opinion children shouldn't be meditcated for things like ADHD for instance, they should maybe get a theripist to work out thier behaviour.

I personally feel that kids are overmedicated as a part of people are too quick to medicate their kids when they get too unruly or out of control. Kids are going to be kids. They are going to be unruly and loud and have attention spans shorter than my ex's weenie. BUT they can be taught to pay attention.
I do believe that ADD/ADHD is a real condition, but does not need to be diagnosed without proper channels -- CT scans, extensive testing and other diagnostic tools. Walking into your pediatrician's office and saying "Brunson (or some other yuppie name) is unruly and won't pay attention" and then the doctor writes out a sript for Adderol or something is NOT how it's properly diagnosed. It's how parents get out of being parents.
It's sad really. Now parents are too eager to pump their kids full of toxic "medicines" rather than find a natural cure and treat the whole body, rather than one issue. Elimintating dyes, sugars and other preservatives are all natural methods to combat ADD/ADHD. Eliminate caffine, sugary sweets and take away the TV time and get rid of the computer are all other ways.
Studies have directly linked TV time/excessive computer time to ADD/ADHD diagnoses in children and insomnia in both children and adults.

I totally agree with proper diagnoses. I'm very passionate about this I see both sides of the fence that dr.'s do miss diagnose things that is why I say extensive testing/ observation. And your correct sometimes you have to go with meds. Thank you for your response I appreciate it and I do agree that some people just want the diagnoses to make their life easier. I was just trying to explain that sometime when the child needs a diagnoses it's not always easy to get.LOL!!!Why is things seem to always go from one end of the spectrum to the other?

I can't copy and paste yet, but I do agree that with proper testing, if the child is dx'd with ADD/ADHD, then meds are fine. I've always been interested in natural or holistic therapies before traditional medications so if I had kids, which I don't, I'd try a natural method before I used medications.
But that being said, they don't always work.
And my dig was mostly at parents who plop their active toddlers on a table at the doctor's office and complain that their 4 year old doesn't pay attention therefore he *HAS* to have ADD/ADHD. My oldest nephew is 15 and even he can't pay attention half the time. He gets distracted eaisly, but but heck, I'm 30 and still get distracted by shiny objects.
But that doesn't mean I have adult onset ADD/ADHD.
Point being in my ramblings is to get your child properly tested with CT scans, brain scans, brain function tests and get more than one opinon from more than one doctor before jumping on the ADD/ADHD med bandwagon.
